Sumea Modeller Challenge

Description

This is where you'll find all the details and contestants for the Sumea Modeller challenges!

Sumea Challenge #8 - skipgamer - 26th july

Hi, I just found out about this modeller challenge yesterday, so I thought, why the hell not. Im no where near as good as the modeller's who I've already seen enter the challenge, but if im ever going to get better, I have to practice :P

Name: Thernys Silverkin.
Also known as: Thernys the Assassin

Age: Mid-Twenties.

Background: Thernys was never expecting to be an assasin, she grew up with the dream of becomming an airline hostess. This plan went sour when she got in with the wrong crowd at high school. After years of being abused by a bad boyfriend, she decided to learn the martial art Ninjitsu. Not long after she dissapeared, and her boyfriend was mysteriously found dead in his own home. From the shadows she watches, killing those who are abusive, corrupt or evil. Be afraid, for if you ever see Thernys you would be lucky to be alive for long.

Description: Thernys has blue-green eyes, light skin and is fairly attractive. A medium build. Gothic style clothing + make-up. Her fighting style is relatively orthodox, but extremely deadly. She also has a habit of seducing opponents before killing them.

I've drawn some rough concepts on paper but my scanners playing up, and i cant find the pen for my tablet >.<

I'm going to be making the low poly first, starting with the basic shape of the character, then adding more details + fixing the shape as I go. Then I will make every thing 4-point polys, work on the flow and smooth the char, and add details for the normal map.

Don't be expecting anything great ^_^ im very "noob"

Any comments + crit are greatly appreciated. ^_^

Hi, Looks great.

Just a quick mention on UV map, Automatic unwrap tool such as pelt are realy fast and save a lot of hassel, BUT, becareful of uv streatching around the boarders (green outline) of torso and head.

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 02/08/06 - 9:16 AMPermalink

If your not planing on doing alot of different things on one side id suggest cutting the torso and face in half, fliping them and plonking them directly on top of the other side. You could really get alot more space out of ur unwrap and enlargen other areas.

Submitted by skipgamer on Wed, 02/08/06 - 12:28 PMPermalink

Update: Haven't really done much, I've been bogged down with a few commission art pieces, tutoring, work and uni >.<
In my spare time I've just been learning the more advanced aspects of Zbrush and trying to finalise a concept image + pose for the final image. Not sure if I will bother with animations, as they are not required.
Gotta hurry up, I really really really want to meet this deadline. Should be able to get a few hours in this week. (and i still cant find my tablet pen, contemplating buying a new one ><)

@Neffy: Thanks for the tip, Ill definately do that with the face. Not the torso though, as I find it hard to make realistic looking creases in the fabric if they are mirrored on both sides. The pants won't be such an issue as it is going to be a dark colour.

@Phlewid: Yeh, I've heard of this pelt mapping, but haven't touched it yet. I only just got 3dxmax8 the other day (used to 3dsmax6), So I'm not exactly sure where all the new features are >.< (and my automatic unwrap option in the menu is greyed out) Sounds like I really should read up on it.

Sumea Challenge #8 - Savarn

Hi,

Better late than never! I really liked the sound of this theme so I couldn't resist. After starting a few various designs I settled with this guy as out of all of them the ideas for this guys background came the easiest and thus is the most inspired ...

I call him Sanguren the Deiknight

Submitted by Neffy on Sun, 16/07/06 - 11:40 PMPermalink

I really like the split colours.

Submitted by Savarn on Sun, 16/07/06 - 11:45 PMPermalink

Thanks guys, today I'm taking some time to refine my concept a little further (be so much easier if I had a tablet, hopefully be able to afford one soon) perhaps get some orthographic views done too. See if I can post some up a little later.

Submitted by Savarn on Wed, 26/07/06 - 6:34 AMPermalink

Alright, here's the start I've made on the model. Started with a mid-poly to get the design right and have mesh smoothed it. I don't use Zbrush but I've heard there's another new, even better program coming out so I might look into that soon to get more detail, otherwise I've got a load of work to get what I want into it still.

I'll post my final concept renders soon, I'm playing around with the Wacom trying to improve my technique as I go.

Was asked about this new program that's supposed to be taking over from Zbrush, but it sounds like it's still quite a ways off anyway - http://www.mudbox3d.com/

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 02/08/06 - 9:08 AMPermalink

wheres the sexy nipples !

Submitted by Savarn on Mon, 04/09/06 - 3:41 AMPermalink

Sorry, no sexy nipples yet, but I'll get em in I promise ... just not sure if I'll be able to complete this by the deadline with Tafe and work but I'll give it my best. At least I'm getting myself a Wacom this week (it's on back order) so I'll be able to finish my concept before the deadline.

Any and all comments and critizisms welcomed! [:)]

Submitted by IronhideNT on Mon, 04/09/06 - 7:24 AMPermalink

cool. Can we see wires? I like the way you've captured his sleek form. It may still look slightly boxy around the head and torso regions and you can soften the verts there.

There's also abit of form I'm confused about defining the rib cage or abdominal area. Perhaps achieve a more smoother curve to define abs?

Submitted by Savarn on Mon, 11/09/06 - 10:41 AMPermalink

Finally found a place in Adelaide which was selling Wacom Intuos3 6x8's for under $500, I know it's still expensive at $450 but I really need one if I'm to improve on my skills as a concept artist. Anyway, I put aside some time this weekend to complete the final concept I've been working on (I'll put the hair on him later :p). Please give me any and all feedback on it, I'm really keen to improve in my Wacom skills.

Mainly used Photoshop but also started teaching myself Painter for blending as there are some really neat brushes in it.

Sumea Challenge #8 ~ Shath

Hello ppl
Heres my concept

[img]http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/attached/shath/2006710193853_captain_01.j…]
german soldier (WWII), after world war 2 ends he heads to asia and entres in illigal martial arts tournements to gain money and live, he's a very solid fighter, strong hard hits and his guantlets for fighting against enemys with weapons, he main fighting style is karate, he learn when he went to japan for a few years during the war, i know what your thinking he looks like m bison but i wsas not trying to go for that. if anything i was basing him the chinise soldier off fist of legend. he also dosn't fight with his hat or cape.

Submitted by caseyjones on Thu, 13/07/06 - 12:31 AMPermalink

Yeah, definately some Bison resemblance. But there's nothing wrong with that.
You've given it your own style and feel to the character and its a very strong concept. Looking forward to seeing this one in 3D.

Sumea Challenge #8 - Delmo - CH#5

Hey everyone welcome to my sumea comp 8 entry thread. My characters name is Konjou Kouken (spirit guardian). Set in ancient Japan he was know as the wood assassin training up in the mountains during the day and assassinating high ranked corrupt shogun at night. He would live most of his life trying to right the wrongs in a corrupt and brutal world through the only way he knew how. After hundreds of years of civil war as the edo era arised peace and new days flourished. He also changed his bloodthursty killing ways and choose to seek peace within himself. He would reside at the Zenkoji temple as a guardian and devoted his life to the safety of its followers and the path to enlightenment until death.

That's coming along really nicely. Man I wish I was that quick with my modelling ... well I'm getting there. I must admit I wasn't that impressed by the concept at first but seeing the model as it is at the moment, I really think it should come out well with some nice texturing.

Submitted by Delmo on Fri, 21/07/06 - 2:12 AMPermalink

Shath: Hey dude, yeah I'm not too bad. Yes I will definitely be using a combination of max and zbrush for the high poly model.

Hey everyone, here's my first high poly progress. I've started with the head so I can get a feel of the character. This is the head I had in mind.

LOVE the little detials around the border of the shield :)
Curious is that just on the diffuse or is it also on the normal map? And how did you do the Japanese(?) signage on the face of the shield? Alpha masks in ZB? or PS normal map plugin..or did you just model them and placed them around the shield?
Oh and what are you using to view your normal maps?

Submitted by Delmo on Mon, 28/08/06 - 11:19 PMPermalink

Makk: Hey, I'm glad you like the sheild. The little detail is on both diffuse and normal maps. The Japanese kanji was done in zbrush and the little detail was done in photoshop. I'm using 3ds max to view my normal maps.

Sumea Challenge #8 happy_virus

This is one of my characters so far what I mean by chracters is that I have not decided on a final for the comp yet, It is not finished yet(it is obliviously seen) and that is because I want to know if it is Ok for the com and it passes all the requirements said for the competition. This is my first time in this competition so I will except all critique on this picture as long as it is helpful not insulting. She is supposed to be holding a spined whip, and a cursed Katana and a double bladed staff on her back. I have not yet determined what type of chracter she falls into, possibly a sorceress. It is not a great design but I have only new to using a Wacom and doing texture art and like I said be4 it is still far from finished.

Other things I need to get done are her weapons, give her a name and draw her from different angles.[:)]

Hello all, what I havent stated before is that this is my first time at sumea and my first time in this competition. So hi to eveyone and good luck to all competitors[:)][8D].

This is the Updated final version of my sorceress character. It is very basic compared to some but then again this is a modelling competition not a drawing competition. I believe there are issues witht the stomach area, If it still requires tweaking I will see what I can do about it and this is the first time I do a human character in this fashion

Like I said before I will accept any critique as long as it is helpful to making my character look better. What I won't exept is insulting critique. Forgive the Aura as it is my first time trying to draw one so if there is something worng with it I cant do much about it.

Submitted by palantir on Fri, 30/06/06 - 9:31 PMPermalink

G?day, welcome to sumea and the modelling challenge!

I like your concept, it does read as a sorcerer type character. The chains contribute to the mysterious nature of the character, though I think maybe they could be taken a bit further.
Possibly a supernatural kind of glow to her eyes might also help?
Also I think possibly there is something a little off with the cape design. I like how it starts with those little dangly bits around her arms, maybe consider doing that with the bottom of the cape?
Another suggestion is to maybe make her pants a little sexier, to better match her top.

Anyway, just some suggestions I thought could help. It?s a nice concept and I look forward to seeing the model. Good luck! [:)]

Submitted by silvermirage on Fri, 30/06/06 - 9:45 PMPermalink

looking good man,
the concept idea is swish, colours need a bit more polishing
but all in all its a mint concept,

don't worry about getting insults,
most of the guys here are a nice bunch of people
we'll give hell to those who insult other ppl's work

I am having alot of troubs getting a model in [:(] I know it's a shame, I have alot of other stuff going on and I am very busy, but If I still manage to squeeze in some time to add the 3D model then it would be great. Otherwise maybe next time, but either way good luck to all of the contestants this a great modeller challenge and there are tons of talented modellers on this site, gw all and again good luck for all.

Good job man, I'm liking the paint over -- reminds me of costume design from Marko Djurdjevic's tribal sketches.

Although the body anatomy is good, proportionally it looks awkward. Kind of like there's no room for things like the tapering of the ribcage, or the shoulder blades are collapsed inwards. Same awkward feeling with the head; certain elements detract from what the eye is used to percieving as basic feminine curves (normal ones, not over-sexualised ones). I'd suggest you get some three-quarter view referance and camera match your model against it to check things like how far back cheekbones go compared to the eyes and eyebrow ridge etc. I'm not sure on the breasts since it's hard to tell without a side view, but you may just be compensating for them sitting within clothing (which is great), so I'll stay away from commenting there. The hands are great, very nice form.

Submitted by Kalescent on Wed, 05/07/06 - 10:07 AMPermalink

Nice quality progress so far! her boobies look more like the silicon 'morale booster' kind rather than natural. Im guessing they are like that because they are pushed up by the costume etc ?

Submitted by Neffy on Thu, 06/07/06 - 8:24 AMPermalink

Is she going to have any shoes ? i think knee high boots of the same style outfit would rock on her.

EIN, critique noted for when i get back to work on the body :)

the model is about 300k at the moment, my computer isnt great so ive had to be really stingy. for example the body out of zbrush is only subd level 2 and most of the simple objects arent subdivided.
heres a screen grab :)

would you be able to explain these tools?

Submitted by shika on Sat, 08/07/06 - 7:49 AMPermalink

well if you use max youve probably used the snap toggle tool before, just set it to snap to face and that will enable you to extrude edges that conform to your high poly.
ill borrow this example from pior
http://www.pioroberson.com/images/minitut_topology_worflow.jpg

polyboost is a plugin for max that speeds up this process 10x, as well as doing a whole bunch of other cool things

Submitted by PeterDavis on Sat, 08/07/06 - 8:16 AMPermalink

hrm. im still finding trouble seeing the advantages, but ill guess ill have to try it later. I can see it being better if you start in Zbrush, but since i dont own it and after trying in the demo and finding myself utterly confused with the program, my roots remain in sub-d modelling. ive always found it simpler and more logical to make a low poly with solid topology, then sub divide and sculpt the low poly and then go back to the low poly to make sure its all consistent. thats what i did for my challenge entry anyway.

so basically you are extruding edges along the surface of the highpoly? sounds handy enough.
oh, and polyboost looks fantastic, thanks for the heads up.

obviously im limited somewhat without zbrush, but as long as the results are as impressive as anyone elses im happy. however its always good to get some insight into alternative workflows. I experimented with a new modelling method (new for me, anyway) and found it far less daunting.

updates?

p.s sorry about huge post ;)

Submitted by silvermirage on Sat, 08/07/06 - 8:40 PMPermalink

hmm, that a nice workflow method!
wonder if there's any similar counterpart to do so with maya?

Submitted by shika on Mon, 10/07/06 - 12:30 PMPermalink

i guess the end result is all that counts :)
zbrush is worth the effort it takes to get over the confusing UI, its so damn fun.

i dont know of a maya equivalent silvermirage (cause i dont know maya), but im sure there's a maya savvy chap on these forums that could share some wisdom via PM.

updates soon

lookin' cool David -- I'd say my favourite hair is the fourth variation cropped dreads look since it's interesting and fits the character style the best.

Submitted by PeterDavis on Tue, 11/07/06 - 11:17 PMPermalink

id say the 4th or 5th, but the dreads would be very cool.
ps you scared me for a second, i had to make sure that first rendered hair was painted.

Submitted by caseyjones on Wed, 12/07/06 - 9:12 AMPermalink

Man this model is definately coming along real well. I like the hair you've got in the full body render, IMO it just seems to suit the character more than the others. The face came out great as well!
You're definately pushing the quality of work in this comp, which is great because it takes this challenge up a notch and forces others to put some to push themselves further to compete with you! Especially myself!
Keep it up!

Submitted by caseyjones on Mon, 17/07/06 - 11:03 PMPermalink

Great work dude!
A quick question for you, as you seem to know your way around ZBrush. You started with a naked body mesh then added the clothing later. Are you bringing the naked body back into ZBrush with the added clothing attached then sub dividing and detailing as you go? Or are you just bringing in the clothing on their own and detailing then exporting it back into Max/Maya/etc and just placing back over the top of the model.
I wasn't sure how to go about it with my model, because I want to work on certain parts of the model at one time then go from there. Or should I just bring in the whole low base mesh then mask out the bits I want to work on and do it that way?
Hopefully that made sense (because my previous post didn't) :/

-caseyjones

Submitted by PeterDavis on Tue, 18/07/06 - 12:15 AMPermalink

the low poly mesh is so tidy, its almost like theres no flow at all but there no 'bad' flow, if you catch my drift. almost like its so subtle that it just looks uniform.

Hair looks good, makes me wish i wasnt so amazingly confused with zbrush.

Submitted by shika on Tue, 18/07/06 - 1:23 AMPermalink

after subD modelling the gear in max, i export it all as a single OBJ file, but keep everything as seperate objects, that way i can use the handy hide by object shortcut(shift + ctrl) that makes working on overlapping gear easy as pie, and make sure everything still fits together after zbrushing
after that i exported just the pieces that had work done on them and imported them into hidden layers in max to save memory on my poor computer.

you could do something similar with your character and seperate the arms/legs/head/torso and just hide the bits that you're not working on in zbrush.

Sumea Challenge #8- LiveWire

No, no images. Just posting to confirm I am actually working on an entry though.

Seems having focused on level work for so long I'm out of touch with my character modeling, so while I'm continuing to work on the challenge, I'll post something up if and when I'm happy with the work ('m not in this to win, just for fun and motivation to model).

Been checking the other entries though, some nice looking work there.
Really liking Tojo's and openanewworld's concept work, and I like the direction Anuxinamoon is going too. And you know Styles is going to make that concept look great!

Keep at it everyone!

Sumea Challenge #8 - caseyjones

Well, I've decided to join the fight. I don't have very much to blow people's minds yet. I just started on a quick sketch of my character and did some tests for the hair.
Character Background
I'm basing this character loosely on myself, but my character will be a typical hardcore/punk/emo kid (Fuck I hate emo music!).
So going the fitted jeans, tee (or hoodie, not sure yet), pair of Nike Terminators, snakebite piercings, sleeve tattoos.
If any of you have ever been to a hardcore show and been in the mosh, you know these hardcore kids pack a mean punch and kick. So I figured, why not take what I love most and put it into a fighter character.
I'll quick rambling and here's the sketch I did.

It is a very early sketch and will need some serious detailing. But C&C welcome.
Special Ability
My character is going to have a firey sort of effect coming from his hands as his special attack. Either a power punch of some kind or a fireball (like Ken/Ryu/Akuma).
More to come shortly. I hope to have a completed concept done by the weekend.

Submitted by caseyjones on Thu, 06/07/06 - 11:01 PMPermalink

Thanks for the feedback, I've really slacked off on this entry. I'll definately use this weekend to complete the concept.

EIN: I like the tattoo idea. I wasn't sure what kind of artwork I wanted to use. I'll take it into consideration.
necrobatore666: Yeah, I think the backpack is the go as well. Oh and "them kids"... I am one of "them kids"! What are you trying to say? :P
tojo: Aerosol attack ey? I was considering putting spraypaint cans sticking from his backpack. As for a skateboard weapon... I'll look into that and see what I can come up with.

Okay, I thought I'd stay out of photoshop for a while and get stuck into the 3D.
I've built a base mesh to bring into ZBrush, the mesh itself isn't built all that great. Had to keep it all quads for best ZBrush smoothing.

This is my first attempt at ZBrush, so I'm open for all C&C to help me made this model more solid. It's still at low divisions so it's not ultra smooth but I'm working my way up slowly. It's only the arm for now but will be pushing myself more and more as I get familiar with ZBrush.

Done some more to my mesh. Chnaged the shoulder area again, trying to look for a good approach to do them. I'll probably change it again later on down the track.

Very nice concept, lots of flavour. Good mix of detail and simplicity and the character looks very dangerous.

If I was to be picky about your concept, I'd say that the legs look (to me) a bit too long. If you look from the top of her hips to whereever her knees would be, that's one hell of a thighbone. Other than that, top stuff.

Submitted by caseyjones on Sat, 24/06/06 - 3:17 AMPermalink

I agree with JonathanKerr, it was the first thing I noticed. But that aside, its a great concept and would make for a very good model. Keep it up!

Sumea Challenge #8 - BlackMajik

Hey all!

Thought i might take a stab at this. Not sure if i will complete it in time (and yes i know the comp goes for a couple of months) :P but we'll see... Concept art isnt exactly my strongest points, so i threw this together. Ive posted a male and female character, but kinda leaning towards the female character. The cowboy concept is a quite rough as its just an attempt at possibly doing a male character.

:)
Cheers

I feel the male cowboy concept has more character to it and is a stronger concept than the female one. Other than the mask and the boots, she really hasn't got much going for her.
But with the cowboy, he has the hat and boots/spurs. The wraps on his arms are a good touch to show that he's a fighter. But I think both concepts could be pushed a little further to make them into really great characters.

Don't stress dude, most CG forums have this whole brown nosing thing going on. People tend not to reply to threads if the poster has like under 10 posts or something or if they have never seen them in the forum before.
Don't let it discourage you. Just focus on getting some good shit out there then your thread will be spammed with comments. :)
Just keep up the good work dude, looking forward to see what you come up with next.

yeah, Caseyjones is right, and don't let lack of replies bother you. You should be proud that you have contributed to the forum, a steady supply of new material/posts are what makes a forum good and you ahve contributed to that :)

It's is pretty early days with your concepts, I think you should refine them both more and post the progress up before choosing one of them - the Cowboy is more coherent in concept at the moment though...

Sumea Modeller Challenge #8 - Guardian of Anubis

just wanted to hear what people think of my idea. i was originaly going to make humanoid wolf creature simillar to a were-wolf. but seing its human only, im going to make a guy with mask. armour is going to be kept at a minimum being used more as a ritual than practical purpose. for weapons im either going to give this guy 2 sickle swords, or a scimitar and shield. i should have some concept sketches up pretty soon. this is going to be my first competition model so im really exited.

Sumea Challenge #8- Makk

Havent got anything to show yet, just securing my spot.

Ive got a few projects on at the moment including getting my butt kicked by Jason Chan in ConceptArt.org's Thunder: Last man standing
[:X][:X][:X]

Hopefully I can get started this weekend.
I do have a character in mind but want to do a few different concepts.

Submitted by Johnn on Wed, 19/07/06 - 8:55 AMPermalink

nice variety of concepts makk. The one you have gone with has a bit of middle eastern / ancient egyptian flavour in my eyes. if you plan to do a weapon for him maybe something along those lines might suit and make it a bit different from the pack to boot?

yeah, those abs could do with a bit of a work out *looks down and talks to self* yeah, those abs could do with a bit of a work out too...

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 20/07/06 - 10:43 PMPermalink

rofl! yeah John I know what you mean :)
Im glad you thought of middle eastern/ ancient egyptian as that is what Im going for. There will be some sort of symbol painted on the front of his skirt cloth.

Here is a minor update for the torso, pretty much finished..
http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/attached/makk/2006719224138_highpoly_wip0…

Oh and I suppose there is no way to like "erase" part of what youve done in ZB? I want to go back and be able to redo the abs but keep everything else that Ive done to it.

Submitted by shika on Mon, 31/07/06 - 11:41 AMPermalink

his torso is looking a bit boxy Makk, his back is especially flat, you had the same issue with your polycount dom war general if i remember correctly. the bits and pieces of anatomy are in the right place, but the over-all form aint right. The proportions look good though

"Oh and I suppose there is no way to like "erase" part of what youve done in ZB?"
could use the smooth tool, works best at lower subD levels

- David

Submitted by oco on Tue, 01/08/06 - 7:50 PMPermalink

This is how I see it makk. Theres a couple of problem areas, a few of the muscle forms seem to independent. Like where the pecs joins with the arms and the abs. The abs are where alot of the boxyness is coming from i think, they need more of a V shape happening, at the moment they are basicly a grid and the edge of the rib cage is maybe a bit to defined. Just need to make the muscles flow a bit better and your problems fixed.

Submitted by shika on Wed, 02/08/06 - 1:27 AMPermalink

the back and abs basically just look like flat surfaces with outlines of muscles cut into them. just pay more attention to your reference and itll look spiffy

-David

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 02/08/06 - 9:01 AMPermalink

i can see the boxyness mostly in the perspective shots you can see with the lighting, a straight line being formed by the dark area and light area (directly under his nipples)

You doing really well tho, just a few little tweaks to positioning of muscles but the shape is comming along great ! keep working on it and dont give up.

Sumea Challenge #8 - Tojo - CH#10

Ok,
here goes..

'Billy the Fist'

My entry is based around the 'classic gunslingerwestern hero ough guy

not sure if i am going to make him kinda brutish like the one on the left... or more of the classic mans-man cowboy... i will probably leave that open until i start modeling..

Pretty self-expainitory really.... he has big fists...

loads up a kinda big bullet/canister full of fuel into belly cylinder/chamber (not sure how) .. then kinda fires a round ... sending heat and energy to his iron fists.... then smoke exits out the exhausts on his back..

...kinda left that open for a possible smoke screen attack??? not sure if that is allowed..??

...and then of course he has spinning blades where usually spurs would be..:)

righty then, thought i would post an update... long over due

... the bulk of the model is mostly done..

i have a long way left to go with the detailing though

ill try an update a bit more regularly as i go through the detailing process..

i am happy with the way it is going.. on target with the concept i think..

caseyjones... yeh, i know what you mean..i will probably have to do something similar... still havent thought about it yet though... got my head stuck in the sand in regards to shaders at the moment...

getting there..

most of the pre-zbrush work done.. (arms need a bit of tweaking and a bit more detail in boots and pants) ... but pretty much there otherwise..

not going to spend too much time in zbrush though...

i am thinking that too much detail may kill its simplicity...

but we'll see i guess..

also need to make sure i have enough time for texturing...

Yup. Really liking the concept. Very original. I think you should stick with the exagerated cartoony style when doing the textures and 3D stuff. It will look very cool. I prefer the one on the left as it suits the style of the concept well.

Submitted by tojo on Tue, 20/06/06 - 6:57 PMPermalink

cheers dudes..

caseyjones>>yeh .. thats the idea with the flaming fist (special kinda heavy punch).. although i am not yet sure how i am going to pull off the texture on them ... might kinda make the whole fist kinda iron... rather than skin color...

J.I. Styles/WAR-HEAD>> i am going to try and stay as original to the concept as i can.. really want to see the stylization all the way out to the end... we'll see what happens though

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 23/06/06 - 1:47 AMPermalink

I'm having a glow-like effect on my character's fists. But instead of just texturing the glow on, I'm going to build an extra set of geometry around the hands/fists. Then just use alpha maps to make it transparent and then texture them to look firey and glowing. It might not make sense, but I'll probably draw up a quick diagram when I get home to show you what I mean. It could help, or might inspire you to do another way with similar principals.

The best entry so far in my books, nice job man.

I have to say I like the cowboy boots in your concept much more than the model. They have a thicker chunkier feeling which I feel got lost in translation somewhere.

I think you could have balanced out the contrast in the colours a bit more, as my eyes go straight to his boots when I look at him - which could be balanced out by either reducing the saturation of the orangy / yellow or increase the contrast of perhaps the gas tank or gloves.

Nice job man I think youve taken this competition out.

Jeezuzz... looking pretty damn nice so far. It will look even better with the shoulder pad, strappy things and jacket. The creases at the bottom of his leg seem a little bit too defined, but it looks like you are making really good progress. Keep it up!

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Mon, 19/06/06 - 8:24 PMPermalink

Very very nice model!

How did you model the creases in the pants? Is that done in something like Zbrush or are you just using normal Max/Maya?

Submitted by silvermirage on Mon, 19/06/06 - 9:52 PMPermalink

wow overkill dude,
i dig the arms up to the fingers, they look very accurate to me
but the shoes look a bit plain, maybe try boots?

Submitted by Makk on Mon, 19/06/06 - 10:59 PMPermalink

Good start :)
Watch his proportions though, he looks abit like a shorty with harry-high-pants. Try resizing the head down more and moving the top part of his jeans down as well, see if that helps.
Looking forward to more updates :)

Submitted by Hiporu on Tue, 20/06/06 - 7:51 AMPermalink

Thanks you all for the nice words. No update today, I think once a week update would be best for now, setting up renders for stuff at this resolution takes a bit of time.

oco: The base idea of the character was from a short flim I started to write which turned in to a game design. The short flim was about this guy and his girlfriend who work as assassins (think Kill Bill) but once a year they each do one assassination on someone which they think would be helpful for sociality. The character for the challenge would be him in his assassination gear. Now that the short flim as become a game, were is main idea and feature of the game is movement inside a open city (think free running, GTA, Ninja Gaiden, God Of War.) The character needs to look as if he can move and hide like a ninja, strong willed, but friendly and caring.

WAR-HEAD: I think your right about the creases. I have a bit of work to do get what I want out of his pants, and I think the pants will be the hardest thing to get right.

JonathanKerr: The pants were made in Max then detail in Zbrush, the right leg is what the mesh looked like before Zbrush. I will do most of my character modeling this way.

Silvermirage: I have another past to do on the upper body, mostly the hands. The shoes will be changed to be more like the concept, I have also being think about other details to add to them which includes ninja socks/wrapping give more of a boot look and I will be doing a Zbrush past on them.

Makk: I think the hood is making the head look huge, also the eye are too high on his face, but before the next update I will review the head size and post a image without his hood. His pants are going to be tucked into his ninja socks, I need to work on that a bit to get it right (done some work on this tonight,) I have made room for his huge belt which makes his pants look high. The pants will need a lot of work one of the reason that they are the further a long then the rest of the model. Thanks, your comments were most helpful.

KILLA DEE: Yes I use Zbrush, have been for well over a year now.

openanewworld: I don't have any other work I can show you, I have been working on vision demos and prototypes for the last 2 years and before that I was working as an animator and only doing characters on the side. So what I'm trying to say is all the recent work I have done is not owned by me, or I had little time to do it (because of the short dead lines on a prototypes) and isn't that great. But all that work helped my art along a huge amount and it has also got me working faster.

Anyway, I'm sorry to tell you guy but there will be no/few updates for a few weeks, I'm in the middle of moving and buying a house (packing the reason for no updates this week) I have to move out this weekend and can't move into my new place until the end of July, so I?m going to be all over the place. On top of this I'm going to Boston for two weeks starting next Tuesday. Sorry if you are all looking forward to updates, but after all this I will have a huge amount of time to get this done :)

I had 2 and a half weeks in Boston (business trip.) The last few weeks I have been in the middle of buying a house and working hard on our current project. But now that I?m all moved in and my work life is back to normal, I going to putting in as much time as I can to get this guy done.

Oh also, as I know there are a lot of AIE and Canberra people on the forums here, and I?m looking for a house mate to move in that has the same interests as me (a little nerdy and arty) is anyone here looking for a room to rent? Send me a MSN message if you are interested.

Sad to hear that you're not finishing the challenge. Your model was coming along very nicely!

Sumea Challenge #8 - IronhideNT

Hi guys!

Really great entries around and its amazing to see so many people enter! I couldn't believe how many in just under a week. Anyway this'll be my fourth challenge. How time flies, but yeah fingers crossed I'll get this finished too.

I've always enjoyed the concept of Soul Calibur so I've based my character around that storyline.

My fighter's name is Pavel Vaimer - a cold-hearted, handsome prince of royal Russian blood. But despite all his riches, his money, his women, Pavel longs for something he has always been deprived of. Power.

Pavel learns that the mysterious soul calibur could well be the key to his wishes. He and this evil weapon could not only take control of his country, but also the world.

Fuelled by this selfish greed, Pavel invests his fortunes in training and weapon development to enter the upcoming Exploding Fists tournament with an eye for the ultimate award- the soul calibur.

His weapon is a electricity shooting staff developed by his own research department. This new technology will surely catch his opponents off-guard.

Although my original idea was to have this staff with a Golden ball top - A la those Van der Graph generators in high school - but I think I may have a play around with it.

Any comments or suggestions will be great. Good luck everyone!

I am very taken by this concept, has a certain clock work orange feel to it.

Hope you pull it off with as much gusto as you have in the concepts, reminds me of classic sword play lithographs.

I love the style you've got going there. He certainly is a pompous looking character. Getting beaten by this guy would be like losing to Raphael, Voldo, and Maxi at the same time ;)

Can't wait to see this guy when he's finished.

Submitted by IronhideNT on Mon, 04/09/06 - 7:05 AMPermalink

I'm still in this! I've been shifting around lately and waiting for a laptop and finally, FINALLY, I can get back to this little project.

I'm trying to establish the right proportions for him right now, keep him stylised (not as much as the concept I guess) and just achieve a clean mesh to start building his clothes.

May have looked at it for too long so maybe he has gone abit out of whack, so if you guys see anything that bugs you give me a shout.

Thanks for your comments guys! And hey Derrick great to hear from ya!

That's a nice mesh you got there. I was planning to enter this comp, but got tied up with work (as usual) and kept postponing my entry. Maybe next time.

Submitted by IronhideNT on Mon, 11/09/06 - 7:54 AMPermalink

If you've half started it or something you should stick it up in the exhibition section. I think that's what a few people have done in the past who haven't finished the challenge...

I hope it's not the same fate for me in this one though.

I've fiddled around all weekend trying to find the right feel for him and while screwing up his nice smooth mesh, I've come up with a silhouette that I'm relatively happy with.

I've also done a paint over with corrections I feel I should make with it. I've got a long way to go.

Still don't know about the hair. And possibly the biceps are long?

I'll keep on ploughing away.

Eeeeyyyep. Still going. I thought I'd just post up a progress pic but I'm still way from finishing modelling wise. (The mesh is rather messy). So I have my doubts about whether I can finish this on time, but I'll definately try.

Okay im opening the account with a couple of quick head studies tonight. About 30 minutes each.

Concept is not my strong point so bare with me people. [:I]

Im not quite happy with these yet, I need to head away from the meat-head and more along the lines of 'strong but smart' looking.

I dont want a cheesy guy anymore [:D]

I'll do a few more until im happy with it over the next few nights.
Finding the time is going to be a challenge in itself, but I *will* be finishing this competition.

**********************************************************************************
Name: Reece Faulk.

Age: 24

Fighting Style: Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Aikido, Grappling and Torture moves / holds and counter attacks.

Background: Reece was Born in Wales 1982 to young, but wealthy parents who shifted to Brazil soon after where they purchased several nightclubs and established a small money making empire.

By the age of 10 Reece was a hardened and veteran clubber and had 6 years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. At the age of 16 Reece went on a tour to seek new experiences, heading to Rio de Janeiro.

After spending a couple of months in Rio he established a small underground Goth night-club which over the period of the next 5 years would grow into an small empire of his own.

At age 22 he is the king of the Goth movement in the Rio Underworld and founder of 'BUFT' (Brazilian Underworld Fighting Tournaments) in which he is the undisputed grandmaster.

Now at age 24 his fighting style has grown to a highly unpredictable mix of grappling, torture holds and savage, painful looking offensive moves combined with the tools and style of his gothic underworld empire.

BUFT has now escalated to a worldwide scale making him extremely wealthy and therefore a target for many would-be world champions.

To this day, Reece Faulk remains undefeated and more gothic than ever.

Great start dude, I like the back story for the character which has helped me picture this concept easier.
But heading in the goth direction, your early concepts of the head don't seem to suit the goth style. I'm not an expert in the whole goth scene so I can't really judge what or what isn't goth style. But from the clothing, I'm picturing a head like Brandon Lee in 'The Crow'.

Submitted by Kalescent on Thu, 13/07/06 - 7:37 AMPermalink

Casey: Oops! Those pics where for a different idea [:P] I'll sketch up some new ones!

Moony: Hes a pale welsh born lad but trained in brazilian jiujitsu - so yeah really interesting combination I thought. I Imagined a gothic styled fighter that fights mostly at ground level with alot of grappling moves would be an interesting combination! [:D]

Neffy: Im not sure if ill put the belts that high up on the pants or not, Ill put them back there when I get to texture stage and see how it looks [:)]

Sumea Challenge #8 - Lechy

Here's an idea I've been toying with, He's called The Acolyte. This is gonna be my first model since the last challenge, but I don't want to get to rusty so it's as good an excuse as any to do some modelling.

Now I gotta try and make a big ass guy look good in a skirt.[:p]

Hmm I agree with you dude: Big-ass guy in a skirt. It's an odd image. Also... he's kinda generic. Don't wanna shoot you down before you start but you did say prelim idea :) And I accept the fact that I'm a little biased. You know my penchant for the slimmer male physique. Wait a minute... that sounds mega gay. Meh, what can you do?

Can't wait to see what your model is like although I'll probably get drunk and forget to check. He's gonna need to fight Joley's chick too! BATTLE!

HAHAHAHA!
But seriously, I like this concept. There's plenty going for it. I wouldn't go as far as to say its generic. If you look at Ken/Ryu/Akuma/Dan from Street Fighter. That's as generic as it gets, but they are the most commonly used fighters (probably not Dan, he wears pink and likes men - kinda like nomiakasu).
If anything, just push your concept a little more to give him more of an acolyte feel. Maybe some markings/tattoos on his body or put some kind of emblem on his clothing or something.
Keep it up!

Sumea Challenge #8 - DrWert

For my character I will be basing it on the masked dude from Fist II: The Legend Continues, a friend introduced me to this cult classic about just a few years ago, the atmosphere of the game was unforgettable. You see I got my first C64 about 4 years ago when I went on a retro gaming hunt around the local op shops. So when I saw the theme of the challenge I had to give it a try even though I have never modelled a character before.

Anyway he is going to be a kung fu martial arts death machine, why he wears a mask nobody knows but he likes to taunt his enemies while he crushes their will. Basically I?ll be trying to capture the harsh survival nature of Fist II and incorporate it into this character.

I?m a newbie to all this character creation process, so any advice along the way would be very much appreciated.

Ok here is a first render practice of my concept. After a couple of crappy sketches i decided on this one. Im also thinking of doing another concept of a female type. Not sure.... I dont have time. I dont even know if im going to finish this.

I decided to change the head cause it looks crap. Im going for a more asian oriental look probably take off that crappy horn he has as well.

The patterns on the character armour will change. Also probably the design of the skeleton heads.

I was going to do a samurai but it seems a lot of people are doing them. So I decided to go for a hardcore boss character.
As usual crits are welcome. I need help improving this.

Also please tell me if the image is too dark. I need to calibrate me monitor properly. I cant seem to get the right balance.

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 16/06/06 - 9:18 PMPermalink

I was just browsing through your site for the first time in like 2 years, big improvement on the design and the content. I was actually wondering if you were working at a games company now. I remember when I met you a while back you were doing some free work for some company on a project you couldn't talk about. But I noticed on your site you're a senior artist for Bullant. NICE! If you don't remember me, I'm one of Daryl's mates from the EDIM course... we went out to Scubar a few times.
As for your concept, it's looking real sweet dude. It looks like a necromancer elf type character. I dont think you should change anything from this concept maybe except for the shoulder armour. Just the size of them dwarfs the character a little and makes him look really young, almost a teen. But that could be what you were aiming for.
Keep it up!

Looking sweet man but i agree with casey about the shoulder pads. Or maybe its the black material coming down from them. They are making his arms look fat and stumpy (kinda like those warhammer 40k space marines). The weapon and legs are sweet, but yeah, his head needs a bit of work (maybe a proportion thing again). Good work.

'its still horribly obscure. just because it won a polycount competition doesnt mean its a given that every games developer knows of it.'

Yea your right about that not every developer knows of it, it was more the number of parrellels that made me think of Corum. The blue glowing eyes, the horns, the black tattoos around the eyes, the slicked back hair, the sillhoute, the weapon etc.

I didnt mean to sh*t on your work I was just suprised you hadnt heard of dominance war, your entry is solid :)Asmuel2006-09-29 07:04:23

Hi all thanks for the reply..
About the dominance war thing damn that is awesome!
The reason i didnt know about that is that i didnt have internet for 9 months! Basically was dying without it. I mainly used the work internet sometimes but hey we are supposed to work and no time to browse. Hell im not even supposed to post. I had to get permission to enter this competition. Im usually upto date with the whole dev community.

As far as my design and Corum design from dominance war. There is some similarities i noticed which is scary how artists think a like and im sure that the guy that designed the winning entry from dominance war got his ideas somewhere and did very good research and a damn good designer as well.

Well a lot of things look a like its just the way people look at it and point things out. Then the whole flow follows on.

Anyways thanks again really appreciate the comments and also great artwork from a lot of people.

Sumea Challenge #8 - WAR-HEAD

Hey Everyone. It's been a while. Howr y'all doin?

I say this everytime, but I'm really going to try to finish this time. I am a bit worried about the normal mapping (i've never done it before) - so if anyone can point me in the direction of the easiest and / or best way to do normal mapping, it would be much appreciated. Cheers.

So anyway, I have been working on a concept which is a bit different. I wanted to go a little retro... but somehow it didn't quite get all the way there. Ahh well. This isn't your standard "fighter" fighter... This one is a little different.

Let me introduce SHAZZA! As an undervalued receptionist, Shazza was made redundant when a perky 19 year old took over the front desk where she worked. Shazza (AKA Sharron Mclaren) was forced to take a job at a rollerskate restaurant to pay for her acting classes. She has found an opportunity to use the lethal combination of her tae bo, rollerskating and cappoeira in a fighting tournament. If she wins the tournament, Shazza will have enough money to never have to work at the rollerskate restaurant again.

So anyways, I did a kinda lanky version of Shazz to start with and then I tried manga style proportions. I think I might go back to the lanky style (or more of a western comic book style) when i start modelling her.

It's good to be back. Comments welcome.
Cheers,

JohnN: Yeah i would really love to get some animations into the final model, but i really suck at animation... And its going to be even harder to do cappoeira type moves with rollerskates. [xx(][?]

Bunny: Thanks HEAPS for the tutes! This is really helpful! I had a quick flick through and i plan to be doing some normal mapping tests this weekend... (Hopefully start modelling as well). As far as the style of the model, im not too sure still. I was going to go for a cartoony look and feel, so maybe the manga style will work better. [?]

I'll keep you posted. Cheers for your comments.

Hey there, liking the double bladed weapons - the concept seems quite in line with the mortal kombat series, kind of a cross between elements from raiden and sub zero/scorpion. Just be careful not to make the design too busy otherwise you'll lose focus on the character design itself.
Keep it up!

Submitted by Killa Dee on Fri, 09/06/06 - 10:00 AMPermalink

Hehe[:)][xx(]Thanks for the advice. All comments and crits are more than welcome[}:)]

This is definately very Mortal Kombat looking character. Could be an evil Raiden counterpart (like Scorpian vs Subzero vs Smoke vs Reptile).
Personally, I dont think your character should have any weapons. He looks like a pretty bad ass combat style warrior with the use of lightning/electricity. That should be more than sufficient enough. Just looking at him would make someone crap their pants.
Looking forward to seeing you start on the model.

Looking good man, nice sword too. As for crits I would lose the green ponytail if I were you. I think it doesn't really suit the rest of the design (especially the colour of it) and makes the whole thing look a bit too busy. Also, the shoes seem very generic compared to the rest of the clothes he's wearing and they don't seem to suit the style either. Off the top of my head I would suggest the standard ninja footwear you see in most Mortal Kombat games:

http://www.midway.com/images/MK_Monks/mksm_scorpion_render.jpg

Or even a boot design that you could incorporate into the shinguards he has already got. That's my two cents anyway. Good job man, I'm looking forward to seeing more WIPs. [;)]

Submitted by J I Styles on Wed, 14/06/06 - 7:16 PMPermalink

I agree with mr. WhiteEagle above, but I always thought the subzero/scorpian characters footwear was real cheesy and didn't quite hit the intended mark... they're not ninja footwear! They're Aussie style sandals... makes me feel like they need a flannelette top and a stubby in their design [;)] I think they where going more for this type?

i prefer the left one. the right one is good too, but it's too much like the scorpion design.

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 16/06/06 - 8:36 PMPermalink

I like the 3rd one best, minus the the fins at the back. Only because they don't appear anywhere else on the armour and would look out of place.
The sword looks great, I think they'd go better than the double ended knives.
Great work dude... START MODELLING! :P

gotta agree with some of the earlier crit that the green ponytail is perhaps a bit too much of a extreme contrast agaisnt the rest of the design. Id recolour it or scrap it peronally, as eagle said it dosent really suit and overcomplicates the scheme

Submitted by Neffy on Tue, 20/06/06 - 10:58 AMPermalink

I like black alot better then green ... but you have alot of black in the outfit already. I like the brown in the first picture you drew.

Nice head, but you said you were doing the low poly first right? if so you might want to get rid of all those little planes on that mouth piece, as the normal map could easily take care of that instead.

And yeah, since youre doing the low poly first then taking into zbrush it would be very wise to keep it all quads so it subdivides better.

Submitted by Killa Dee on Fri, 30/06/06 - 1:01 AMPermalink

Thanks Makk, I'll make those changes to the mouth piece tonight. :):)

I have decided to change my concept a little. I?m going to change him from an electric ninja demon thingy, into a radioactive napalm ninja. I will make the left hand side of him burnt and disfigured. When you hit him in the head his mask and hat will fall off to reveal his facial deformities. I?m also planning on changing the colour scheme to black heavy leather with silver highlights. And he only has 1 eye now. keke

I hope this still fits within the guidelines?

Submitted by silvermirage on Fri, 30/06/06 - 9:47 PMPermalink

hoho,
what an interesting concept,
i will definitely look forward to this one,
all the best mate!

Submitted by picpoc on Wed, 05/07/06 - 8:04 PMPermalink

it's really cool, but it looks a little like a child?.probably it?s just the big hat- it looks a bit tall, maybe u could just squash the hat just a tiny bit

Submitted by Killa Dee on Thu, 06/07/06 - 7:12 PMPermalink

Thanks for the comments I really do appreciate them. I will make the changes to his hat tonight. I also made his sword to big, DOH! [:D]

something is not qutie right with your website :( its gone 'gappy' (viewing in Firefox) looks like cell width settings need to be corrected. apart from that technical detail it is good with clear layout. I particually liked the links at the top that indicate the type of file they link to.

Submitted by Killa Dee on Sat, 15/07/06 - 2:08 AMPermalink

Thanks John, I have been trying to replicate this error. I have tested it in every browser I can think of, But I can?t seem to replicate it. However I have made some adjustments to my tables it may help. :) I probably should have used a template.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Tue, 22/08/06 - 3:31 AMPermalink

Whos a pretty boy then :D Kidding, thats really cool. Theres still a reaaaaaally slight ellement of childish proportion in him, cant figure it out. Someone whos studied anatomy a bit better then me might be able to help (ive got a feeling its got something to do with the boots...)

Submitted by GuyBrave on Wed, 23/08/06 - 3:33 AMPermalink

hey there..... I couldn't help but notice that your normal map seems to be rendered in world space rather than tangent space..... I was wondering if this was deliberate?

Sumea Challenge #8 - Gogitason - CH#13

Hi Guys,

Just reserving my space :)

I'll be making an "All Blacks" fighter character.

Submitted by skripturez on Tue, 27/06/06 - 7:20 PMPermalink

way cool man! i might suggest some more maori tattoos... cant wait to see this puppy in 3d

Submitted by LiveWire on Tue, 27/06/06 - 7:54 PMPermalink

heh, that's actually really close to what i'm working on. Appart from the Maori face and football boots. I've been thinking of taking a different direction though. Good luck in the comp.

Submitted by palantir on Tue, 27/06/06 - 10:50 PMPermalink

Haha, great concept, love it. [:D] Good luck!

Is it worth considering putting him in a tight all-blacks jersey?

Of course if he was going into a real game, he would need an Aussie Rugby player counterpart!

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Wed, 28/06/06 - 12:40 AMPermalink

Really cool design - captures the feel of an aggressive grapple fighter. Although I've seen the pose before, the design is really cool. Perhaps some of those more recent maori tats where negative space is prominent (with koru designs) on his arms would look good. I can't really describe them but you see them on NZ rugby players like Carlos Spencer.

I really like the details in this design: the feather, the authentic Maori belt design, the tiki, the pukana (?) and the hair.

Submitted by souri on Wed, 28/06/06 - 12:43 AMPermalink

There's something we haven't seen before! A maori combat fighter! Awesome idea, and lovely concept art [:)]

Are you going to model him with his tongue out?

Submitted by Gogitason on Wed, 28/06/06 - 8:54 AMPermalink

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah, I'll be modeling him with the tongue out and also be putting some tats on his arms.

Palantir, I'll be making an alternate skin/texture with a tight all-blacks jersey. Don't know if I'll have enough time to make an Aussie Rugby player counterpart though [;)]

Submitted by tojo on Thu, 29/06/06 - 7:42 AMPermalink

cool.. this is sweet... !

i would definately play this character

..but then and again i am a new zealander :)

Nice design! Some more tatooy things would add a little more icing to the cake.

Just for you own benefit though, in future it's probably better to state when you've done a paint over. It'll help down the track anyway if you do it from scratch, learn anatomy etc.

Good luck!

Is this true Gogitason?

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 30/06/06 - 1:47 AMPermalink

When I originally saw the concept, it appeared as thought it was a paintover. Some of the painting is inconsistant. But its not my place to accuse.
Overall, nice concept. But if this is a paintover, its best that you state it is.

There are obvious similarities in these pictures, but maybe he is just not confident enough in drawing that he needs some sort of stencil. The actual concept is pretty different which is the essence of what he is trying to express. I still think he should have mentioned it though, but I am willing to let it go. This competition isn't judge by the concept sketch afterall, but the end product. And I'm sure that won't be able to be traced.

Submitted by Gogitason on Fri, 30/06/06 - 6:50 AMPermalink

Yes guys, it is a paintover of zangief (Streetfighter) as shown in Goldenchobo?s reply above. I apologize for not mentioning this in the beginning.

I thought this was allowed as mentioned by Souri:

?Concept idea must be your own, so you can't get someone else do come up with the idea for you. Your concept drawing is't required for the final submission, so the judges won't be judging on your concept drawing. You don't have to create something that is really "far out" and a totally original design - I mean, it could be a modern day character with a few design adjustments to make them looking a bit unique and aesthetic. A few of the characters in, say, Street Fighter 2 are pretty general looking characters (Zangief (wrestler), Guile (marine)). Although if you do take that path, I do suggest that you add something a bit more to sex up the design a bit (insignia's etc).?

Since we are not being judged on the Concept Art, I find it a lot quicker/easier to create the concept by painting over a reference pic and changing the proportions to fit the concept idea.

The concept idea is my own and it is original (only some bits of the concept art are mine).
To make a good 3D model, I think it is essential that you have good reference pics. This is my way of putting the idea that?s in my head quickly on paper & also get good reference for the model.

If this way of doing the concept is not allowed, please tell me now & I?ll draw the concept from scratch.

Souri?

Submitted by Goldenchocobo on Fri, 30/06/06 - 8:40 AMPermalink

I could be wrong but I think "Character concept" refers to the ideas and not drawing itself.

If I am wrong though, the drawing should be redone or at least not submitted.

Submitted by PeterDavis on Fri, 30/06/06 - 9:15 AMPermalink

im pretty sure we are only judged on the actual concept, not the concept art.

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Fri, 30/06/06 - 10:40 AMPermalink

Indeed. The concept itself, not the concept art. In which case, despite the paintover, this concept has a lot of character and I'm really impressed by the ideas expressed in it.

Submitted by souri on Fri, 30/06/06 - 4:25 PMPermalink

JonathanKerr, PeterDavis, and Goldenchocobo are right. Concept art isn't going to be submitted to the judges, but the guidelines say the idea has to be original and not a blatant copy of existing characters from other games/movies etc

Paintover's are fine, as long as it doesn't share too many elements of the original. Usually when you're using someone elses work as a source, it's proper ettiquette to mention it, but it's not really a big deal in this case. Keep going mate!

On a side note and to lighten the mood - Check out Zangeifs package, hed be a hit with the ladies. If you make that Allblacks fighter wit hsome tight pants give him a decent package [:)]
Sorcerer Bob made a comment in one of my threads along time ago that the lack of wang angered him - I share that anger these days, were allowed to have massive boobs, buttcheeks and even nipples on the girls but all the big surly hero characters lack wang. Bring on the wang [:D]

Submitted by Neffy on Sun, 02/07/06 - 3:52 AMPermalink

i also share this anger.

Here's an update on how the low poly model is coming along (5540 tris). Still have to join the halves & clean up the mesh, so that would bring the polycount down a bit more.

I'm thinking of adding a belt buckle with the "All Blacks" logo on it.
Let me know what you guys think I should change/fix to improve it.

Sorry HazarD, but I didn't give him too much wang...hehe [;)]

I like being mentioned in the same sentence as the word wang.

I think reducing men to asexual blobs of muscle is foolish. We're living in a society where masculinity is becoming more and more defined by the amount a guy spends on hair his care products.

Gorramit!! Bring back the biff. Let's make being male be about huge wangs, testosterone and beer! Not about wearing pink shirts with the collar up while sipping vodka cruisers (with the pinky sticking out).

The short shorts and footy boots are a step in the right direction. Now! Emphasise that mullet and give him a wifebeater/apron with boobs on it.
