Activity #1 - IronhideNT
Alright, I've been keeping an eye on this one, and finally I've gone and done something!
My character is meant to be a type of young ace pilot from the world war 2 period (or something).

It's abit rough round the edges, but any comments or critisims would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Activity #1 3D Modelling - Adie"
heres a qick screen grab of what iv made so far.. aiming for 330 faces its taken me an hour so far... face count 298
Activity #1 2D - JohnN
Here is my first post (hope it works!)
I started with redrawing the figure, then played 'Dress-ups' with it. Total time for these added up to 3ish hours in front of telly.

...2 more hours and I got some colour added.

I felt that being a quick activity that I would keep the sketches fairly basic and try to create a 'visual synopsis' of each character rather than fuss with details.
If I were to do the activity over again I think that I might have done several variations on one theme rather than spread my thinking/drawing time across 3 different ones. I think this would have resulted in a more detailed finishing point, which inturn might have lent it's self to a more sophisticated application of colour (I don't mind the simple, bold colour. It has done its job of describing materials and form.)
Activity #1 - 2D Matias
Heres the pencil sketch I came up with, she's a little too butch and the face need alot of work.
I was going for a generic armour look, nothing special, I gave her a nice sort-of gorget just to make here a little bit more important.
I'm itching to start the colouring but I'm back home in Townsville so of course I left my tablet back in Brisbane, so the colour won't be here for a while, oh well.
Any suggestions and insightfull hints to fix the face would be well appreicated.
Cheers
Matias
[img]http://home.austarnet.com.au/esjakku/link%20art/G_Armoured_chicka.jpg[/…]
I don?t mind the butch myself, but I suppose it depends on what you are trying to achieve. I think the main thing that could do with some work, is the addition of some more personal marking, rank, insignia, scribbled slang stuff like that, the little details that will make her more interesting and more individual. Other then that I think the boots could do with a bit of work as they look a little generic and don?t totally fit with the rest of her design.
But it is still a good concept.
Pantmonger
Ok, I've spent a little too long on the sketch, but here it is, I added a bit more stuff so she looks, better equiped, I was gonna put a pack on her back, but I thought she could have someone else carry her packs!
I'd better get started on the colour version as I am back in Brisbane, back with ma trusatee tabalet!!

Cheers
matias
Hey, ok after messin about and not working on her, this has taken a while, also had trouble with her eyes, damn finickey things, plus I got tangled up in little details that seem really cool a 300-400% but back a this size, about 50%, they sortof disappear.

Feel free to comment, I might be willing to make changes if anyone see anything drastic. Overall I really liked this Activity, I need practice with chicks, my tablet and lighting, plus I learnt that I need more practice.
Cheers
Great finish for the project.
I think her anatomy might be a little out of whack in several places (obviously not worth changing at this point.) The inside of the left shoulder guard looks a bit flat and under worked compaired to the rest of the pic. Her shoulder should be visible/dissapearing into the armour here too- same as on her other arm (which is done really well.)
Yeah, I need to practice my anatomy, I downloaded that old figure drawing book by Loomis or someone, but my female anatomy needs work.
Malus, looking at the neck it does seem a bit long. I'll have to go have a look at the warcraft 3 stuff, I haven't seen it so it could be a bit freaky.
JohnN, Thanks, I did skimp on that side I was going to make it really dark, hehe, but that through the whole thing out of wack.
Cheers
Activity #1 2D - jwalduck
Just pencil roughs at the moment. I thought the provided outline looked a bit 'hippy' or dumpy so my first sketch was an attempt to make the proportions a bit more classical.

This sketch was a freehand thumbnail of an Egyptian inspired costume. It just kind of grew as I doodled which shows. The original was half the size of the images above and below.

This was inspired by the dumpy look of the original outline. It was not classical so it suggested someone a bit more rugged.

The first two were done in one home bound train commute (about 45 minutes) together with a lot of thumbnails of faces and heads (which were OK, but masculine).
The second was done on the following day's cummute.
Obviously (from all of these) I need to work on faces.
For the moment I have no easy way of rendering these. I am left handed but have come to use a mouse right handed... I am investigating investing in a tablet, but I want to improve my pencil sketching to justify it for myself.
Comments please...
They are quite good considering that you don't seem to have a lot of confidence in them. It is very difficult to find fault with them as they have been kept fairly basic. I will try to give some comments though.
. It is nice that even with a simple drawing, you tried to show the pleats in her clothing. I really do like that :). Her face really does need some work though (as you said). He hands could definitely use some more detail. If you are after reference images for drawn egyptians, then have a look at some of the Medieval Witchblade comics (there are some later ones set in Egypt).
. The mechanic is quite cool. Her face is pretty much non-existant, but that isn't too bad. My only real complaint is how does her belt stay attached to her pants? (or other way around).
Overall, I do think that they are good pictures and you have a lot of potental. My advice is to make them a little larger and try adding in more detail. If you have difficulties drawing faces, then try drawing them from photos. It isn't cheating, and it really helps to capture a more natural feeling. Can't wait to see more :D
There is some nice stuff going on here. I think with the Egyptian one you need to pay a little more attention to how the fabric flows and falls as it rolls off the curve of her torso before being lifted out again as it meets her arms but as you said it come out of a doodle so I can?t crit it too hard.
I do like the mechanic, she does look very ?earthy? and it comes across well, I think that she could use a little more in the way of personalization, unless she is just supposed to be a generic grunt. But other then that I think she looks good.
Colouring with a mouse can be a pain in the butt at the best of times, more so if you have a complication doing so (Ie left handed, using muse right handed) I would recommend that you get a tablet, just a little one, they are not so expensive at the moment. Sometimes with art it can be hard to motivate yourself to create art, having road blocks in the way make it that much harder to get motivated. Remove the road blocks and get creating, it in itself justifies the expense.
Pantmonger
all my personal stuff I do with my cheapo $90 acecad. Everything in my portfolio www.jistyles.com is done with it. It's cheap, it's nasty, but its specs are more than alright (512 shades pressure, good accuracy and sampling), and it's good for me personally since I like smaller surfaces to get work out fast.
yup - mine also has the added after-purchase value of a large crack running along the casing, the pocket pen holder broken off the stylus (I hated that little thing), and gaffa tape holding the battery case closed in the stylus. Why you may ask? well I've probably broke this tablet about 5 odd times in varying degrees because I take it places, it gets banged around, I'm not precious with it, and that's exactly what I like about it. It's cheap, it's solid, it does what I want, and it's nothing to replace once it does eventually die (I've had it for a very long time - much longer than I really expected it to last quite frankly).
One other point of note about it is that it complies with part 15 of the FCC rules - It will not output interferance, and it will take any interferance it is given. One thing I HATE with a passion about the much more expensive wacoms like the intuos 2, is how much interferance it gets from my 21" monitor at work - it makes it jitter and jump around everywhere, unless I'm sitting way back or have it uncomfortably in a position on my lap.
Anyways, enough of my tangent, I gotta get ready for that before-mentioned work :/

There are a few areas that I could use some more work, but I dont have enough time to continue working on this. Was good fun though :)
Oops, I was supposed to post pics that are texture on model unlit 100% self illumination and texture on model lit. These are just 60% self-illumination, sorry.
Just a quick note about the smoothing group seams in the rendered images - if you import the .3ds because that format is kinda bugged, you'll need to select all vertices and weld with a real low threshold since the mesh itself is broken up a little on import; this'll fix it.
Good job Makk - there's a few areas which could use some attention but otherwise a great job. Few little niggles I see are:
-Colour variations are needed (red around the nose, slight purple/blue tint where the skin is thin under the eyes, ears a little more pinky flesh toned etc)
-Nose is quite flat - rounding that off and giving it a little bit of a highlight from the skins oil that noses seem to get)
-eyes need another detail pass - tear ducts, eyelashes etc)
Good job. With better smoothing it would probably look a lot better. I agree with JI's comments, but I would like to add one more.
His lips are just a bit too sharp. It looks like you followed the meshes' wireframe a little too much. If you were to round the lips off a little it would look a lot better.
I really like his stubble though. Gives him a great 'sassy' feeling. Looks a little too much like Max Payne though.... just not as constipated (thank God).
Well done again.
Small update

I adding some small colour varition, tweaked the eyes abit, lowered the eye brows and tried fixing the lips. Speaking of the lips, I hate em! I cant seem to paint them at all, frustrating!!
Styles: I tried adding some more colour varition into the nose, eyes an ears, I wanted to be subtle, but maybe its too subtle. Thanks for the crits and helping with fixing the smoothing.
Aven: I tried rounding off the lips some more, but it was hard as the lips are hard edges. Now that you mention it, he does kinda look like Max Payne, hopefully not as constipated!!
Dw makk, max payne was one of the oddest facial skins ever. The funniest thing is that it was photo sourced, meaning someone said "ok pose for max" and someone screwed up their face like they were sucking on a lemon on purpose :P .
Anyways, youve done well with the model youve got to work with, its rather blocky. The only thing that really stands out to me is that the corners of his eyes seem to be a bit stretched on both side but thats probably a model limitation
Heh, I havent looked at this in ages. Man those lips are horrible and I was lazy with the neck area!!
Hazard: You might have to ask Styles for taht since he mapped it, but Im guessing it was done so you could have a bit of assymetry on the face, so you could put in spots, freckles, etc.........but I was too lazy!
MoonUnit: Thanks :) Yeah there is a bit of stretching around the eye, could be the texture or model or even the UV map.

Great stuff pants [:)]
A nice design, a good feeling of weight, a balanced feel to the characters design - good stuff. The only other obvious thing is it feels very warcraft 3 night elves with the skin and hair colour combo and empty white eyes.
The lighting feels very ambient and diffuse - the ranges a little "off" over the different materials. Eg, darkest point of lighting on the skin doesn't match the darkest range of the metal or cloths. one way to check against this type of thing is to be looking at it from a good distance, so zooming out to 33% magnification or looking at photoshops little navigater window to help look at the picture wholistically instead piece by piece as we're prone to do when we get into the detailings. The other thing that really helps with this is to put a hue/saturation adjustment layer on top of your stack and pull the saturation right down effectively making it grayscale to just look at the tonal ranges.
One thing you may want to consider, more a stylistic presentation thing than anything, but in your coloured pic maybe lose the internal inking lines, like the knee, rib, and neck lines, and rely on hard edged shading to describe these forms.
Nice, I really like the headdress, I think the metal work is done nicely. I also like her sword, that's a funky sword! Although, the outline could be a bit too thick on it, I think in the coloured version the thick overall outline gets a bit lost, so you only really see it on the headdress and the sword. Maybe if the whole colour was lightened a touch so that the darkest tone isn't as dark as the outline, maybe. Sweet!
Cheers
Matias
J.I. Styles:
Thanks, the warcraft 3 skin tones was one of those things that just happened as I was thinking of the skin I wanted on a dead person the hair colour I just liked and the eyes, well at higher res they look more like cataracts then empty white.
I will try the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer next time I do something along these lines.
Usually I would remove some of the lines you mentioned, in this case I was pressed for time so everything got done a bit faster then I otherwise would do it and certain things didn?t get done. Like the fact that the line work is still in pencil, I would usually use ink, stuff like that. But thanks again for the feed back.
Makk: Thanks.
Happy Camper: Thanks
matias: Thanks, Yeah the outlines thickness and tone is giving me a few issues, next time I?ll make sure that I make time for the inking step.

Activity #1 2D - MoonUnit
well i thought id give it a go, seems like one of the quick activities is a good way for me to get into the site comps. Id go with one of the other comps aswell but id rather build my skills in Max before i tried.
Im not to sure what to do with this figure (decided to work with the given outline as is)... ill do somet thinking (perhaps sketches) and see what sort of character ill apply to it.
Itll be done all in Photoshop most likely, though i might have some hand drawn lines to scan in....
Activity #1 2D - J.I. Styles
Well, thought I'd try my own hand at this as soon as I'd posted it [:D]
This is a subject I want to push myself in, so it's actually quite a good practice for me. Anyways, line art soon to follow.
Well I finally got myself to do that line art [;)]

Painted to come
Basic idea behind her is she's an intermediate member of a small group of women with the innate ability to create and control kinetic energy; she's sacrificed her vision to further develop these powers, instead of seeing the world, she feels the presence of everything within the reaches of her powers, from each individual blade of grass, to the small animals hidden below the earth in their burrows.
Ok
got the time to finish this off; it was fun - I enjoyed getting this out [:)]

Great stuff and I echo the Brom comments.
The only two nit picks I?ll throw at you, and they are only nit picks, are:
Her chin seems to protrude a little too much and it makes the lower part of her face seem a bit small and squished.
The other is with the splayed hands, the gap between the last 2 fingers is usually the largest (in your picture its smaller then the others)when that hand is splayed like that as it is from the pinky that you are pulling the hand wide.
But other then that great pic.
Pantmonger
Woo, loads of comments... I'll try my best to answer [:)]
Sounds like my efforts in colour theory have been paying off *grins*
Been wading through complimenting colours, relational triads, emotional/symbolic studies, and all manner of crazy notes and theories - If anything, I think it's giving me an understanding of why things look right, and knowing they will whereas before it was a thing of trying stuff and seeing if it feels right.
MoonUnit: Thanks [:)]
Makk: That's quite a compliment for me - Brom is among one of my favourite technically skilled artists; his knowledge of form, depth and colour are amazing - his recent stuff is starting to get stale in design, but his pieces always amaze me.
Sorceror Bob: I think my line art isn't as strong as it could be - the final painted piece is the thing I have in my head at the start, but I can never seem to portray the idea as well in line art as I'd like to.
JohnN: Thankya - Loving these Brom comments [;)]
IronhideNT: 100% digital, all photoshop 6.0 - and welcome to the boards, noticed this is your first post [:)]
Pantmonger: I think I lost something with the translation from lineart in her face - I want to fix that a little at a later time; The chins definitely borked [:)]
Good point on the hands too with the spacing - looking at that now it's something I completely missed - Cheers!
Aven: Thanks Aven [:)] been trying to improve my 2d skills in pre-viz/concepting/painting recently, so I'm glad it's paying off - btw, always get a laugh at your sig [;)]
Love the colouring - how do you get your skin tone like that? Do you go over it digitally with a 'normal' brush set at low opacity? Or do you use 'multiply'? I'd really like to see how you do it? For your highlights do you use a low opacity white? Because your skin tones just scream Brom, and I don't even really know the guys art aside from a few pieces.
Things that aren't quite right -> the fingers on the hands would suggest that they are broken -- they're at very awkward angles.
The pose doesn't quite look natural either. Her knee is at a nasty angle -- I think this is what contributes to the 'unnatural' look of the pose.
Good to see a female that isn't busting out of her bra too. Good work. As one final nitpick, I'd like to point out that she's got a very muscley neck - even athletic girls dont have necks like that.
Your work has got me inspired to start doing some colouring again.
JonathanKerr: skin tones are just colours laid down with normal brush settings - no real technique, just choose your base colours and do it.
In choosing the skin palette I started with just my base and darker skin tones adding in basic shading, then did the same for the areas flushed red with more blood (getting towards the hands, plumper areas, and face). Same values, just changes in the colours temperature. Next is lighter area shading (not quite highlights yet) for both of those areas, then drop shadows (usually a slightly cooler, lower value and more saturated colour). After that I do any shading fixes to sort out any volume issues, and then do some cooler (towards a light cyan) highlights on the light skin areas, and a more more pink/purple highlight on the meaty areas.
Sounds like a long list, but it's just really choosing a few colours and using that palette to define form and volume.
I was actually wondering when you'd come and tell me off for all my nasty proportion and pose problems [:D] Hopefully I'll get a little time again later and fix a few of the bigger problems. Posing hands is one of my weakest areas, so hoping to get some practice in on that and strengthen that area. Cheers for the crits! [:)]
#1 - Texturing
Brief:
To improve upon your organic texturing skills both in terms of your 2d abilities and conforming to the uv's by skinning the head model provided.
Things to do:
1) Texture the head model provided using 1 512x512 texture sheet. It doesn't have to strictly be human, but must conform to the mesh and its uv's (so crazy light blue coloured humanoid alien with snake eyes and a whopping scar across its nose is just fine!). The point of this is to improve your organic texturing abilities which are arguably the most difficult area for people to get to grips with.
2) Create a personal thread for yourself in this format:
"Activity #1 Texturing - Your Name"
Post your images in this thread (texture sheet, texture on model unlit 100% self illumination, texture on model lit).
Activity resources:

Hopefully this covers most all applications imports - if your application isn't covered, firstly check for an import plugin, and if that fails download a conversion program.
Feel free to discuss this topic in this thread.
Good luck!
Help me out here -
Firstly, what application are you referring to which doesn't support .3ds? (the resident max format is .max btw, .3ds is a raw old format which the vast majority of applications support import of). As far as I knew, .obj was lightwave object file - that's far less cross standard as far as I knew. Hoping I'm proved wrong [:)]
secondly if you could supply me with a url of a working .obj exporter plugin that works for 3dsmax 4.x I'd gladly supply it. Sending a few more formats to put up.
edit: just adding that the other formats I'm supplying are .dxf and .asc - 3dsmax 4.x (what I use at home) doesn't support any other exports out-of-the-box.
Maya hates .3ds files. Tried quite a few times before. I thought it supported .dxf, but I can't find it listed there. If you try putting it up, I will definitely give it a go.
Maya's preference for cross-app formats is .obj (like Lightwave and I am fairly sure most other apps are the same). Here is a link to a few .obj importers/exporters for Max
http://www.highend3d.com/3dsmax/plugins/?group=maxplugins§ion=import
Don't ask me how well it works as I haven't used Max for two years :p
You shouldn't have to worry too much about exporting files for LW use as LW could always open Max scenes perfectly.
There was also another free app that was released a few years back that could open any 3D file format and export it to any other format. I can't remember the name of it, but I will ask my 3D walking bible friend about it.
Deep Exploration will do it, although it's not free. 30 day trial does it though. http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/index.htm
aven: that proggy would have been that one in the Deep product range (deep paint, deep uv's etc) something like deep explorer or something *shrugs* I used to have an older version which was good until they changed it into the commercial bloated poop they have now. No idea where to start to even dig that up though unfortunately.
Anyways, got souri to host up a few more formats (.asc and .dxf) as well as the base flats both blocking and wires (cheers for that souri, hope I'm not getting too annoying [:)])- anything else you need I'm sure you can export and make yourself [;)]
edit: hehe, good call souri [:D] - yes I'm slow in posting [;)]
#1 - 3D Modelling
Brief:
To create a low polygon model of a human skull within your chosen set limitations using your polys as efficiently and smart as possible; the aim of this activity is to improve your skills in modelling for realtime application.
Things to do:
1) Model your skull within one of these polygon budgets:
330 tri
650 tri
1300 tri
No matter what budget, you must make sure to stay as efficient as possible - this means every poly you use must be add something to the mesh ("justify your existence" perhaps? [;)] ). So using the 1300 polys and producing a mesh which could visually be in the 330 poly budget is bad [;)]
2) Create a personal thread for yourself in this format:
"Activity #1 3D Modelling - Your Name"
Post your images in this thread (shaded/flat faceted/wireframe).
Activity resources:

Feel free to discuss this topic in this thread.
Good luck!
First off, this thread is for discussion of the topic - the bit saying:
2) Create a personal thread for yourself in this format:
"Activity #1 3D Modelling - Your Name"
Post your images in this thread (shaded/flat faceted/wireframe).
tells you the format of where and how to post your work and progress [:)] oh, and don't forget to state your budget you're aiming for - I'm assuming the 330 faces.
As for the questions, I assume you're meaning why the set poly budgets? That's to give people a budget to work within, which is something very important in the real world; If you're given xxxx amount of polys to work with, you're expected to do the best thing possible at or very near that number. It als teaches you to use what you've got in the most efficient way possible that describes as much detail as possible.
As for five sided polys, there's nothing bad with them unless you're doing high poly subdivisional work, because they won't subdivide as well as a quad (four sided poly) would. Also, understand that a poly is still made up of tri's/faces. The most basic form of geometry is a triangle - to be a solid thing it has three points which makes the most basic shape (if it where 2 points it'd be a line and therefore no surface, it'd be invisible). So a five sided poly is made up of three tris, it's just that all the inside edges are invisible. They're still there, just you can't see them on the wireframe.
#1 - 2D/Conceptual Design
Brief:
To improve on lighting, colour, and dealing with 3d in a 2d environment, your brief is to design a character using the base provided, and then take the lined/inked image to a finished 2d painted state.
Things to do:
1) Line/ink out your character design using the image base supplied - remember that this is only a basic pose/proportions guide. Feel free to alter it in any way, but just remember it's there to get a clear end product (eg, an unclear half of a face isn't very useful for people to give helpful advice on how to improve your 2D skills).
2) Produce a finished coloured ("rendered") 2D piece
3) Create a personal thread for yourself in this format:
"Activity #1 2D - Your Name"
Post both images in this thread (line art and finished coloured piece) along with any design notes or ideas on your character or aspects of your character design.

Quick Activities Discussion
Feel free to discuss the "Quick Activities" forum, any activities you'd like to see, or anything else related to the "Quick Activities" forum.
I like the anatomy idea makk - it's encouraging concentration on a particular area of study to build solid foundations, which is a very good thing.
Next thing we need to start thinking of is what medium the initial activities will be (eg, low poly asset, pure digital hand painting, or anything and everything).
How about sprite design? With the GBA a major platform it would be appropriate for 2D art to challenges similar to a 3D low poly modelling comp. Something like 50x50 pixel character with walk cycle, or character with unique attack. (Actually someone would have to tell me the usual sprite sizes on a GBA, I know there are artists here)
Not sure if this fits in the "build solid foundations" area.
that's a bit more relevant to the sumea draw club jwalduck - what we're trying to do here is make assignments, not challenges, to improve your own skill and help and share with others.
We've talked about concentrating on activities which solidy foundations and fundamentals like anatomy, colour theory etc etc but in a fun way to learn.
First assinment(s) should be up within a day or two [:)]
apologies for taking some time, but we really do want to get this right and encourage a supportive and active place to do this.
I really like the GBA sprite idea. Nice and simple, yet would challenge he hell out of a lot of 3D guys here :D
I wouldn't mind some life drawing excercises either. Perhaps along the lines of, provide an image, and then people can get on and try to draw it. Any medium can be used, and any style as well. My teacher back in college was really supprised when we had to do life drawing (from a nude model then and there), and I was drawing with comic book style line art.
I really like that GBA idea though.... Yeah I know it's a repeat :)
Well I derailed things there when I brought up sprites. I can see what J.I. means, here we are looking at skill building through personal exercises rather than through challenges. A subtle difference that I missed.
There would be some merit in animation exercises. I'd also be interested in light/shadow and colour exercises. Basically anything, I often need a prod so I am not left sitting there with a pencil and a blank piece of paper.
As for medium I'll have to stick to traditional media for now. I'm a left hander who uses a mouse right handed. Oh, for a tablet... its on the christmas wish list. But I think this should be fine. If we are concentrating on the fundamentals then media becomes less important as they should be things you can take from media to media.
I was thinking of a small sprite activity for the draw club section actually. The idea to get action in the draw club, I think, is to make activities much shorter so that most people should be able to participate in them. Nothing more than simple 2 hour projects... Anyway, I won't derail the conversation here - will post something up there soon.
Although not original (anymore :p), how about something like this?
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11580&pagen…
Fun as all hell to participate in :)
The initial 3 activities are now all planned out - the resources for them are being gathered/made, so expect all three posted shortly. There is one assignment for conceptual design, modelling, and texturing each; all are short turnarounds, and we intend to encourage a constructive environment to help each other improve [:)]
Forum Rules and Guidelines
This forum is a place where you can complete small projects and get feedback on them.
The idea is for you to improve your skills in a structured manner.
Ok heres how it'll work.
At the top of the forum there will be a number of projects. You can work on them in any order you choose, and you'll have a timeline of a few days in which to get it done.
This timeline is activated when you start the challenge..
Eg, If a projects length is 3 days, you'll have 72 hours from the time of your post to get it done.
This will have to be a trust system of sorts, post before you start not when you're half way through it!
When you complete your project, deliver it to the main project thread. At this point we'll close your thread, and Joel will give you some constructive feedback.
Now for some rules..
It is our wish to keep this board as spam free as possible, we'll be unmercifully deleting any off-topic posts like they were the plague.
This is your warning..
On the same note, we ask that you keep all praise/comments to the personal threads.. Any non relevent posts on the main project threads will get deleted.
The syntax for the personal threads will be as follows
Project and #: Your Name
Easy.
And remember! This isn't the place to compete with anyone but yourself!
We want you to learn and develop, and send us your first pay checks when you get employed in the industry!
Activity #1 - Makk
Nothing major to show, just some sketches and a WIP shot of the final.
The first one is just working out a composition, the second is working towards the final idea.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~rowanfamily/sdc/sketch1.jpg
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~rowanfamily/sdc/sketch2.jpg
One thing to note is that my sketchbook is A3, so not all of it fits on the scanner :(
And here is the begginings of my final piece. I had to up the levels in it in PS because the lines are light.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~rowanfamily/sdc/sketch3.jpg
Im having to squeeze it onto the scanner, so the top of the wall is higher and so the floor extends downwards some more.
I bought some markers today so I might use those to render with.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~rowanfamily/sdc/broom1.jpg
Main shapes have been inked, going in adding more detials.
Am I the only one doing this now? it seems like it...
so far it looks like a good start. my only complaint is that it is a bit too symetrical. to the point where the two middle chairs (front and back) are lined up perfectly to one side. maybe you should try to offset the chairs slightly or move ans angle the camera slightly to one side.
i still hope to enter this challenge, but the high poly challenge still takes preference over it.
looking good though.
ASS!! [:(!]

And a photo of it, so you can see the whole of it.

Not happy with this, although I did learn abit from it. Rendering with markers is hard!
[V]
Who else is going to join in, its awfully lonely in here!!!
Environments are a tricky thing to get the hang off if you don't do them alot.
I think you need to add alot more to this, it lacks interest, my eye just went straight to the table and then to the windows then sun/moon, composition is a hard thing to get right.
As for the markers, don't be scared man, add some more dynamic lighting, it looks to flat.
Also I may bee wrong and correct me if I am but from the size of the strokes on the page this was done on an A3 sized piece of paper right? Not a good idea to use such a large piece of paper especially if its your first attempt.
Markers are easier to control on smaller pieces.
Whats with the big yellow date?
When Makk posted his first post, he said that he was working on A3 and that he had a bastard of a time scanning. I guess that the date is from his camera. That post has since been changed though.
The marker work isn't too bad. I haven't used them in years and Malus is right, you should probably give them a try on smaller paper. Just make sure that you keep your pressure even or it will look crappy.
Everything looks a little too blocky. Everything is made up from squares, even the city is in even rows. Perhaps breaking it up a bit will help. The table also looks a little small for the rest of the room. Some extra furnishings would also help. These are just picky little crits though and i'm sure that you will probably add more to it as you go along.
Overall it is looking good for the style you have chosen.
Malus: Yeah, I think this really the first kind of interior design sort of thing that I have done. I agree 100% that it is boring, I feel the same way.
I should have add more dynamic light source to it, but I was kinda afriad I would screw it up (I wish there was an undo button!!!).
Yeah, did on A3 as it was in my sketchbook. I really had to stretch out the size of the strokes, espacially on the floor. The yellow thing is from the digi cam, its the date.
Thanks heaps for your comments, much appriecated! :)
Aven: Next time I will use some smaller paper. Alot of it is blocky becuase I really didnt know how to properly construct circles, but I have since learned how to. I sgree that the room could use some more stuff in it. Thanks for the comments :)
I probably wont do anything further to it, as Im quite over it :(
Although I might just do another, this time digitally!! ....err, but dont hold me to it!! :P
Thanks guys :)

This is my rough start

Crap, I checked it after hitting F5 and I realise I'm caching the original. I 'll just stick in the URL.

A good place that i can recommend that you host your pic or pics, is boomspeed.com they dont give you much room unless youre a paying customer but its better than nothing, you just got to make sure your pics are fairly low on the kbs, then you can obviously upload more stuff.
Just though i would suggest it, since youre having hassles with your currnet linking. Otherwise if its all sorted, forget i posted anything at all. hehehehe[:I][8D]

There's also this place I know called Sumea Launchpad... [;)]
I often wonder why people who have no hosting or problem hosting dont use the Sumea Launchpad. I myself use it every now and then for the forum comps and the like, as far as free hosting goes it rocks, I think you do as all a great service by making it avalable Souri.

too true,[:I]
i appologies souri much respect to you for the site, im definately glad i joined. But in terms of hosting do you just mean the main page and profile stuff or do you offer some other hosting solutions?
New Sumea Activity Paint Idea
Because the participation levels of speed paints were pretty low (probably due to the fact that it requires people to be free and here at a certain date and time), I'm thinking of taking the activity in another direction.
The new activity would be somewhat like the modeller challenge where someone posts a topic, and we'll have 2 weeks to paint our interpretation of it. We can each post a thread like "Activity #1 - yourname" and update our images along the way, so we can see how each other work. You can spend as much or as little time as you want with it, just have something we can all look at at the end. It'll be a small, fun, creative activity for everyone, with no voting required.
I'm leaning towards this idea rather than speed paints because by then end of those two weeks, and depending on how far you take it, you could have something you could use (portfolio, website etc).
I've noticed that there are a fair few graphics tablet users here, so here's a chance to flex ya pens! Anyway, it's all for a bit of fun, so give me a yay or nay!
YAY! i have always wanted to get into digital painting, but never really had the... inspiration. this would be great. go for it.
yes Craig Mullins is an absolute legend, but these are my two fav digital painters.
Linda Bergkvist www.furiae.com (site is down at the moment)
Anry (can't read Russian, so i don't know his real name) www.anry.ru/eng/index.htm
then there was this one...
www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=86888 (faints)
anyway. i would love to give it a go.
Sounds good! You can start anytime you like. Make sure your pictures are 800x600, and you make your own thread as mentioned above. Activity #1 - yourname. I hope everyone joins in. You can spend as much or as little time on it as you like. From experimental quick scribbles to finished pieces, I want to see it all!

Yeah I love Anry's stuff. Thanks for the link as well. I've only ever seen Anry's work on www.gfxartist.com. If you like Anry you should probably check out GFX, it has alot of great artists in the Elite Members sections. You should also check the top 25 pictures section (called G-spot). Great tutorials too.
As for the drawing activity I'd start it tonight but I'm going to see Something for Kate Live[:)], so I'll start tomorrow[:D].
okay. i guess that i will post what i have figured out from the other posts. anyone feel free to change it if i am wrong.
Theme
. Boardroom.
Rules
. Futuristic or ultra-moden style.
. Should look very expensive. So expensive that you wouldn't even want to pass wind in there.
. Must be an interior view. Should try to have a window(s) to show the outside. this will allow the artist to show the city or countryside.
. Figures/characters may be placed in the scene, but remember that the set is what is important.
. Hand drawn sketches or other templates may be used for a base, but it should actually be painted using a painting or photo editing package. This means that you cannot create a set in 3D, paint the textures and then render it. This is a 2D comp.
No time limit has been anounced, so take your time and enjoy.

I saw it on Khang Le's web site. Worth a look if you've never been there before.
So only Lukeo25 has submitted an entry so far. What's going on guys?
I'm getting my WACOM Graphire 3 6 x 8 in 2-3 days. I have an interview/portfolio presentation with a Uni on 4 november so I might start working on this when I get my WACOM and put it in my portfolio so I kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Otherwise I'll start it after Nov 4.
congrats mr monger...
just got back from a long 'study vacation' ;);)
Yawn im tired but the first thing i do is get back on sumea...iz good...
just found this topic...ill be happy to join....the boardroom eh...can i just take a foto of my dad in one of his business meetings? he looks pretty rich/evil/powerful hehehe. ok ill post up soon.
Next Speed Paint on Sunday 15th, June..
Pencil it in! 8pm till 10pm AET. Oh, and I am hoping Major Clod will do the honours of coming up with the topic for this one!!
***TONIGHT'S TOPIC***
Tonight's speed paint will be all about alter egos. Find a well known character from a movie, game, book, etc.. and create an opposite gender version of that character. Feel free to use a bit of creative licence on the character, just make sure this is some sort of resemblance. Post an image of the original character with your design if you like, so that we can compare them!
Have fun! :)

TY Speed Paint
Ok, this is for the Sumea Speed Paint that's on for Tonight...
Tonight is going to be a colouring activity! Colour in this line-art by Steve Stamatiadis from Krome! Do your own lightings and shadows and filling in (e.g you might want to paint in fur or another short design).. Make it look interesting! Include a background as well! You might even want to go over the black lines, so they don't show up in the end visual. It's up to you!.... for colour references, you might want to check Ty out at http://www.eagames.com/official/ty/home.jsp?ncc=1 , or you can make up your own colours..

Save this image, paint it, and post it! (don't change the dimensions!)
my disclaimer: im not an artist, i never have been an artist, and im never going to be an artist... i dont know if ive done this right or whatever... all i did was go crazy in photoshop :P

well im no artist, but this brush strokes modifier make me look like one... [:p] PSP is a cool coder tool

Worked from the bottom up, got a bit rushed at the end (needed a bit more time).. I'm happy with the bottom half [:)]

Spent another hour or so on it cleaning it up a bit..
Thanks for all your efforts.. some very interesting stuff, especially from Rezn0r. ;) .. those of you who missed out (where did you go Brain, Inglis, Cyrstalmesh etc!!), at least have a go if you have the time.. :)... I think I'm gonna work on mine to make it a bit more sharper / less messy / more finished... Good to see the code monkeys have a go :)

Just under 1hour, simple cell shade. Would of liked to use a full 2 hours but I have no time.
I think this one was a little to easy for 2 hours, should have had to redo him in a different pose and paint it.
Great stuff though guys, especially pants. (even though you didnt do it in the time frame)
Reznor your a sicko lol.
I think the fact that Crystal Mesh worked at Krome might have taken the edge of wanting to do this one too, he'd be seeing this guy in his dreams as it is. lol.
Sorry I left without word. Net dropped out, then housemates needed to use phone, then I had dinner, then I couldn't get back online so I hit the hay. Oops @:-)
My first attempt. Meh.

I didn't know where to go @:-p

Now, who I didn't get to comment on...
redwyre: C++ is dongs. @;-)
Souri: Heeey, that's pretty spiffy!
BlaK: Nice stuff dude. Where's the lensflare? @;-D
Major Clod: Unf! Always nice when someone doesn't follow the rules. With style.
Pantmonger: Niiiice! Obviously no stranger to cell shading.
Lookin' forward to the next.
I actually quite like the style of your first Ty pic a lot, Brain. That kind of style would make a very cool Ty cartoon (or game!), I reckon!
If Krome makes more sequels for Ty, they should develop on with Ty's son, and call him Tyson.. geddit? Tyson??? TySON????? *boom-tish* I'll be here all week, please tip the waitress..

A little bird told me that if TY were to have a son he'd be named Styg... after the actor Styg Wyems who played TY in the first game :-)

Next Speed Paint on Sunday 18th, May..
From 7pm till 9pm EST in Australia.. (this is so New Zealanders don't have to be up till 12 to do their entry [:)]).. so pencil it in!
i reckon we should have a speedpaint session every sunday night or at least every second
Peter Gillespie
www.3dluvr.com/eagor
What's this all about then?
Someone suggested in the irc channel that we have some sort of speed paint challenge happening.. So I'm thinking of having a short 2 hour speed paint activity once every month.. perhaps on a Sunday night when everyone should be at home. Topic would be announced via the irc channel, and then you paint as best/fast as you can then post it in this new section.. waddya think?
irc.uq.edu.au (QUESTNet), at the channel #sumea
20th April this month for the first speed paint.. I'll post news as the date draws nearer.. 8pm to 10pm.
i dont think we need strong guidelines, just - 'you have 2 hours go and paint something'.
but if we are going to just limit it at 'theme/genre' ..e.g. fantasy or scifi..and a person can go and paint their fav scene out of aliens, or an alien environment or just an alien of their own creation in a sexy pose (just using that as an example:))

*edit* yes i obviously ran out of time :P no clean up.

I am a sensitive artist.
Scott.
Nice stuff, I love the subject [:)]
few points - First obvious design stuff, don't think there were too many pink haired female fighter pilots, but hey I may be wrong [:D] and it's obviously a very conscious design decision.
Past that, one other thing sticks out, that's the "ace" part - To be an ace pilot the first thing that sticks out in my mind is she'd of had to have piloted many successful missions - she looks very under-decorated for that. That's a fairly nit-picky crit though [:)]
