New Sumea Activity Paint Idea

  • In my first and previous post in this game dev log entry, I had written that I wanted to do a game which was a collection of simple retro games. Unity released a new major release (2019.3) while I was putting the initial project together, and I…

  • Well, I'm making a game . I'm spending the next few weeks on making a small game to showcase the gamedev log feature on tsumea where any member can create a game entry and other members can post journal posts with art, music or just development…

  • Just a test #2. Still working on the new section.

  • So, I got a Commodore 64 when I was in the 4th grade. It came bundled with a Rolf Harris picture building program on casette tape which never loaded properly but from what I could tell by its box cover, you could build pictures from a selection…

  • Yes, the site looks very different and I've had to prematurely switch to this new theme that I'm working on for a few reasons, the main one is that changing certain aspects of the site to fit the new theme will affect how the old one looks for…

  • (this is just a test, please ignore this entry)

Here is some of my old work.. the first pic is of a 3d model of a human head I was working on about 2 years ago in 3dsmax, using nurbs. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't model a head with…

I currently work for

Because the participation levels of speed paints were pretty low (probably due to the fact that it requires people to be free and here at a certain date and time), I'm thinking of taking the activity in another direction.

The new activity would be somewhat like the modeller challenge where someone posts a topic, and we'll have 2 weeks to paint our interpretation of it. We can each post a thread like "Activity #1 - yourname" and update our images along the way, so we can see how each other work. You can spend as much or as little time as you want with it, just have something we can all look at at the end. It'll be a small, fun, creative activity for everyone, with no voting required.

I'm leaning towards this idea rather than speed paints because by then end of those two weeks, and depending on how far you take it, you could have something you could use (portfolio, website etc).

I've noticed that there are a fair few graphics tablet users here, so here's a chance to flex ya pens! Anyway, it's all for a bit of fun, so give me a yay or nay!

With the ever present time pending declaimer, I am keen for this and will probably take part. Nothing motivates more then a reason for doing something rather then random doodling.

I'll be in it if I have the time. I could use the practice and an addition to my portfolio. I was going to suggest this anyway but Souri beat me to it, I also suggested a concept design challenge earlier but nobody was interested. Since I can't do any 3D at the moment I may as well do some 2D.

What about a theme like " The Boardroom "

Attributes.

Dark, Long , Futuristic, High over the City, All technology presented in sleek decorative form,
The views from windows show parts of the city and distant countryside.

What are your thoughts?

Submitted by Malus on Wed, 22/10/03 - 4:06 AMPermalink

Me likes that idea Luke, would you have a figure in the composition or just architecture?

Submitted by Happy Camper on Wed, 22/10/03 - 9:37 AMPermalink

Sounds good. What kind of rules/restrictions can we expect?

Submitted by lukeo25 on Wed, 22/10/03 - 10:48 PMPermalink

I think figures can add to depth scale and atmosphere. So yeah, I reckon we should have the option to add them.

Submitted by lukeo25 on Wed, 22/10/03 - 11:15 PMPermalink

So is this the official theme ( The Boardroom ).?
When is a good time to start.?

Submitted by Aven on Thu, 23/10/03 - 12:27 AMPermalink

sounds great to me. if it is architecual based though, will we be able to make up a quick box model in 3D and then load up that pic and paint over it? to help with perspective.

Submitted by souri on Thu, 23/10/03 - 1:54 AMPermalink

Sounds good! You can start anytime you like. Make sure your pictures are 800x600, and you make your own thread as mentioned above. Activity #1 - yourname. I hope everyone joins in. You can spend as much or as little time on it as you like. From experimental quick scribbles to finished pieces, I want to see it all!

Yeah I love Anry's stuff. Thanks for the link as well. I've only ever seen Anry's work on www.gfxartist.com. If you like Anry you should probably check out GFX, it has alot of great artists in the Elite Members sections. You should also check the top 25 pictures section (called G-spot). Great tutorials too.

As for the drawing activity I'd start it tonight but I'm going to see Something for Kate Live[:)], so I'll start tomorrow[:D].

Submitted by Aven on Thu, 23/10/03 - 5:00 AMPermalink

yeah i've been to GFX Artist. that was where i first saw Linda's work. i really have to thank Bob for that. thank you Bob :D

Submitted by Aven on Thu, 23/10/03 - 8:49 PMPermalink

okay. i guess that i will post what i have figured out from the other posts. anyone feel free to change it if i am wrong.

Theme

. Boardroom.

Rules

. Futuristic or ultra-moden style.
. Should look very expensive. So expensive that you wouldn't even want to pass wind in there.
. Must be an interior view. Should try to have a window(s) to show the outside. this will allow the artist to show the city or countryside.
. Figures/characters may be placed in the scene, but remember that the set is what is important.
. Hand drawn sketches or other templates may be used for a base, but it should actually be painted using a painting or photo editing package. This means that you cannot create a set in 3D, paint the textures and then render it. This is a 2D comp.

No time limit has been anounced, so take your time and enjoy.
