Sumea Paint Activity3 - IronhideNT

Rightio, Erm, Cyborg for 3? Anyway, when I think Cyborg, I think Star Trek Borg. The only thing I remember though is the poor people they assimulate and the inner struggles they face as a Borg?

Originally I just wanted a bust / head composition, but now I think it's a little boring and I want abit more of the body. But I though I'd post a progress sketch before I overwork it.

Submitted by IronhideNT on Fri, 15/06/07 - 4:18 PMPermalink

Think I overworked it abit and lost the plot... if I get more time I may try another for this activity

Submitted by Killa Dee on Fri, 15/06/07 - 7:38 PMPermalink

nice work on the colours makes your concept totally vivid! great work.Killa Dee2007-06-15 09:39:50

Sumea Paint Activity2 - IronhideNT

Hello... I decided to knuckle down and finish this in one hit or else it'll drag on and never get finished!!

My self portrait is based on my new hair style (or at least what I think it would look like eventually).

Self Esteem problems? Absolutely!

Great work everyone!

Submitted by Killa Dee on Tue, 22/05/07 - 1:57 AMPermalink

great use of color, i like this drawing alot for some reason. It makes me think of 80's Saturday morning cartoons!

He needs a yoyo and a water pistol.

Looks great, nice style and colours to it.

Just playing with textures in PS, trying to get used to painting with CS2

EDIT: Small update belowMakk2007-05-16 19:50:43

Submitted by souri on Thu, 17/05/07 - 3:28 AMPermalink

Did you mean CS3? Your pic is coming along very nicely, Makk.

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 17/05/07 - 5:52 AMPermalink

Some small changes

Nah, just CS2 Souri. Had it for a while just never really got into it. As much as i enjoy using Painter, i hate the very small colour box, makes it harder to pick accurate colours. So im giving PS a go.

Submitted by IronhideNT on Mon, 21/05/07 - 5:08 PMPermalink

The textures on your PS version are great!!.Are you going to use your pencil sketch and use your texture brushes over them?

Submitted by Killa Dee on Wed, 23/05/07 - 9:29 AMPermalink

I like the brush work in your first image, it looks rad. Keep up the great work! Killa Dee2007-05-22 23:29:48

Submitted by Makk on Mon, 28/05/07 - 5:42 AMPermalink

Thanks guys.
Made another one, this time just using the airbrush. Kinda unfinished as i found using the airbrushes rather boring, id much prefer using textured brushes that give it more of a textured/messy look to it.

Want to do one more.

Submitted by Makk on Wed, 30/05/07 - 1:22 PMPermalink

Last one, this one is more abstract then the others...

Submitted by IronhideNT on Thu, 31/05/07 - 1:45 PMPermalink

Spooooooky...Great mood you've got there, I like it

Submitted by Johnn on Fri, 01/06/07 - 2:42 AMPermalink

nice variety of moods and techniques Makk. The first on is particularly good with the texture, mood and technique all matching up.

I know what you mean about the colour picker interface in Painter too, but I guess their reasoning might be that you can mix colours on a palette or the canvas mimicking how you work with natural media.

Sumea Paint Activity #2 - dodgyville

Sumea Paint Activity #2 - Johnn

self portrait with a (green alien) twist!

A little under 90mins of solid painting. Would have liked to add in some more detail and a background but that would have taken the time well and truely beyond the scope of a quick activity.

Submitted by souri on Tue, 08/05/07 - 6:53 AMPermalink

Submitted by UniqueSnowFlake on Thu, 26/04/07 - 8:03 AMPermalink

Click on the "Insert Image" button (picture of a camera.
When you do this, a box should come up asking for a URL to your picture. should look something like the one I just posted.

If your computer won't let you use the "Insert Image" option then post the URL into the forum and I'll upload it for you.

Submitted by souri on Tue, 01/05/07 - 2:46 AMPermalink

Yeh, sorry.. since I've moved the forum to the new server, uploading images don't work for the forum. If you want to upload images, you can still do it via your Sumea profile. upload art there, and then copy and paste the location in your forum message here.

This is where Im headed. Always loved old sea stories so now Im involving myself in one! This is me surfacing in the belly of a whale after been Swallowed like old Ahab. with a little shanty community of old and new ships alive inside

Submitted by WhiteEagle on Tue, 15/05/07 - 5:29 AMPermalink

Looks very nice man, good job on the painting. I must admit, before reading the description I thought you were portraying yourself as some kind of man-fish jumping out of the water. Not to say there's anything wrong with it, just funny how people perceive the same thing differently.

Submitted by oco on Tue, 15/05/07 - 6:13 AMPermalink

funny you should mention the man fish idea. Been very tempted to take it that way.. some legend of the deep! Because Im not exactly sure how I can clearly convey the whole whale idea at the mo

Submitted by WhiteEagle on Tue, 15/05/07 - 7:55 AMPermalink

Haha, cool, you could take it either way and get a nice result at the end. Personally I like the absurd man-fish idea, but that's just personal preference.

For the whale idea I think your second last image post was going the right way about it. Having the ribcage of the whale painted up behind the ship (I'm guessing that's what those strokes of colour are?). The perspective on the ribs looks good to me, so I'd just paint them up all shiny and veiny. Or you could just put a hook and lure in your guy's mouth and call him a legendary man-fish...

Submitted by oco on Wed, 16/05/07 - 7:55 AMPermalink

...the legend of man fish. Is this version to dark? I have two monitors and this looks great on one and way to dark on the other, all the cloud detail is lost. Alot of colours get lost. Compare it with the one above and tell me which is closer to the mark.

oco2007-05-15 21:58:33

Submitted by Makk on Wed, 16/05/07 - 4:21 PMPermalink

This has turned out great Oco, particuly the ship. I wanna see a higher res shot, its kinda small. Dark toned images always look really dark here on sumea due to the farily light bg on the posts.

Submitted by souri on Thu, 17/05/07 - 3:25 AMPermalink

It doesn't look too dark on my monitor, I can see the cloud details fine. Brilliant work!

Submitted by WhiteEagle on Thu, 17/05/07 - 9:59 AMPermalink

Looks fine on both my monitors too man, nice job.

Submitted by oco on Thu, 17/05/07 - 12:18 PMPermalink

Well here we go, my last minute submit. It's been a long week . I sketched this during my Data Com lecture. I cut out the notes in photoshop so that's why the top guy has no stomach.
I was trying out different poses so sorry about the horrible neer-anime style.
I think I'll go further with the guy on the bottom left. What do you think?

From fear of Souris wrath here?s my little sketch

My tablet is broken so its hard to draw things :(

Submitted by souri on Thu, 08/03/07 - 4:52 PMPermalink

Looking very nice there, Neffy! Your drawing style is very cool, and your figure's pose is very interesting.

I'm doing a search for a new tablet as mine is broken also. I want to join in of course, but damnit, I can't go back to drawing with a mouse again!

Submitted by Neffy on Fri, 09/03/07 - 1:35 AMPermalink

My pen has tissue paper and stickytape holding it together and requires you to press really hard to get a response XD

and cause its not waaaaahcom i cant get a replacement pen easily :(

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 14/03/07 - 6:48 AMPermalink

Because this is the PAINT challenge I decided I was going to use PAINT !!! wooooohoooo and its also alot easier to use my MOUSE atm as well (u have no excuse now Souri muhahaha). I hope his bits look ok, its not like I have the referance on me :(

dam right !

Submitted by souri on Wed, 14/03/07 - 10:34 PMPermalink

I used to draw with the mouse for years... I ain't going back to that again! (I used to draw using a joystick back in the C64 days as well, and let's just say I'm glad those days are over too). I haven't had the time to hunt around for a new cheap wacom, but if anyone has some links and suggestions, please do send it my way. I want in this activity as well!

Picture coming along nicely, Neffy, but damnit, why are you hurting yourself like this? MS Paint *and* drawing with a mouse? o_O

Submitted by Neffy on Thu, 15/03/07 - 2:37 AMPermalink

Im used to using a mouse, cause when your doing max and stuff its a pain to change from mouse to pen just to add a little highlight to that part of the texture. So being the lazy thing that I am I just keep using the mouse

But wow a joystick ! that would be interesting to use. Did they have Paint back then ??

Here was the first pic i did in paint XD

Submitted by Neffy on Tue, 03/04/07 - 2:11 AMPermalink

Well i wasnt able to finish on time so in order to finish at all i took my little paint image into photoshop to finish off... i still used the pencil tool if that counts.

Sumea Paint Activity #1 - IronhideNT

Hello! I'll give this one a go. I usually stick to character side of things but this time I want to try full compositions. (It'll at least improve my perspective!)

So. "Nude. Angel". I came up with this sorta story in response to that.

Philbus, the Love Angel came down gracefully from the heavens to join Prince McArthur and Princess McAndrew in holy matromony. As the confetti flew, Philbus knew his job was done and flew away never to be seen again.

"Goodbye my sweet couple" he said, "goodbye. May love find you all"...the Royal guests all looked up to catch a last glimpse of him.

They got more than what they bargained for...

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 07/03/07 - 9:20 AMPermalink

lol that?s great, he?s so oblivious to the fact he?s giving them a peep show.

New Sumea Paint Activity

Would anyone be interested in a new monthly Sumea paint activity?

It's something we could run once a month and have all the contributions placed in a nice gallery for comment and viewing etc?

Submitted by oco on Mon, 11/12/06 - 5:23 PMPermalink

Sounds good. Its good to be given a task to tackle, especially if its something you wouldn't often attempt. expands your skills. I'd be in!

Submitted by souri on Thu, 14/12/06 - 8:13 AMPermalink

I'm a bit over my head with stuff to do on the site at the moment, but we'll definitely get this off sometime near the beginning of next year.

I also want to do some sort of "member focus" that I've mentioned around here ages ago. A likely set of interviews on Sumea profile members on their work etc for the Sumea Creative section. We need to get some of the art activities happening back on the site!

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 14/12/06 - 9:48 AMPermalink

Sounds good souri :)

Submitted by souri on Thu, 15/02/07 - 3:36 PMPermalink

Ok, we're definitely doing this start of next month. I've been a bit preoccupied since, well, Christmas, but I'm planning to buy a new gfx tablet and joining in the fun!

Submitted by Aureus on Fri, 16/02/07 - 1:29 AMPermalink

Sounds good. Just wish I was a good painter and could find my Wacom. :(

Either way, there is some nice concept work on this forum, so I look forwards to seeing some of the entries.

Submitted by souri on Thu, 01/03/07 - 6:40 PMPermalink

Ok, I'm starting our new monthly paint activity NOW. This is your assignment for this month. Everyone is required to join in the fun, otherwise I will get *very upset*.

For this entire month, I want all participants to concentrate on this topic. You can spend as much time or as little time as you like. But in the end, I want to see something from everyone. You can provide sketches, you can do a speed paint, or if you have a tonne of time to spare, you could do a full blown complete piece. It's up to you. The thing is, you have to try. If you don't, I will be very disappointed. I don't care if you think you suck or not. Give it a go!

The topic for this month is this: A nude man with wings. Yes, we have a nude figure with wings on the Sumea main page, and you can use that for inspiration if you like, or you can go completely off on another tangent. Up to you! Just make it interesting!!!!

Post your thread in this section of the forum (Sumea Quick Activities). Name it:

Paint Activity #1: (Your name)

The size of your canvas is 1000x800 pixels. At the end of the month, I'm going to compile all the pics and place them in a special viewing gallery on Sumea!!Souri2007-03-01 07:43:59

How naked does this man have to be? Like can he wear a piece of cloth to cover his wang?

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 07/03/07 - 1:28 AMPermalink

I Neffy fully support this activity and would like to express that people stick to the "nude man" theme and not cover up anything with pieces of cloth.

If it was a nude chick you all would be going full out detail on her chest and don?t deny it.

Thanks Souri ^_^Neffy2007-03-06 14:30:57

Submitted by souri on Thu, 08/03/07 - 4:59 PMPermalink

You could come up with clever ways to conceal the wang (shadows, one leg over another etc) but if you feel you need to cover it up with a piece of cloth or fig leaf or whatever, talk to Neffy about it

Submitted by Skyla on Tue, 13/03/07 - 8:30 AMPermalink

Submitted by souri on Wed, 14/03/07 - 10:31 PMPermalink

Stick to the 1000x800 so we can have some consistency. It'll look neater in the gallery that way!

Submitted by Kyall on Sun, 18/03/07 - 7:31 AMPermalink

Here's my contrib (yer I'm a programmer, not an artist):

Not gonna put it in its own thread... Should we be keeping all of the paint activity related stuff inside the pain activity thread anyways?

PS: LOL this is the first time I've ever actually painted something in photoshop - I've read tuts and that on it but I never actually went and did it - yays for quick activities.

Submitted by Johnn on Sun, 01/04/07 - 1:43 PMPermalink

So how about another topic for April?

The last one got a fair response and I am keen to keep the momentum and go another round. Maybe an environment or hardware design to offset the character based one we have just done?

Submitted by dodgyville on Sun, 01/04/07 - 3:16 PMPermalink

I agree ... and would not be adverse to another naked man theme!

Submitted by souri on Mon, 02/04/07 - 10:58 AMPermalink

I will post a new topic on Friday. Can everyone finish off their pieces by then, please? I want to put a gallery up!

Submitted by Makk on Wed, 18/04/07 - 3:54 PMPermalink

err...a new one soon?

Submitted by souri on Wed, 18/04/07 - 5:47 PMPermalink

Hey, sorry for the delay. I've been busy tidying up Sumea Creative in preparation for saving the work from these activities. I think it's probably better if a different person nominates a new theme at the end of the current one, to keep it interesting. How about you nominate a topic, Makk?

Submitted by Kyall on Thu, 19/04/07 - 4:39 PMPermalink

Lol sorry I just couldn't resist. Green aliens sounds cool.

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 19/04/07 - 4:59 PMPermalink

Ok souri no probs.
Since there is only a short amount of time left, i figure something fairly simple like a self portriat could be it.
It wouldnt have to be a normal SP, you could do one like yourself as a green alien for example.

Submitted by souri on Thu, 19/04/07 - 8:32 PMPermalink

I think we should keep this topic for the remainder of this month as well as next month.

Also, please post your work in a new thread with the activity #2 header. Also, make the picture size any dimension you like, this time!

So what's the topic? Green alien or self portrait? You crazy froods...

Submitted by souri on Fri, 20/04/07 - 3:10 PMPermalink

We'll go with Makk's on for the time being. I'm more than happy to go with green alien for the next one. We had a good number of people participating in the previous activity, and I hope even more people at least have a go with this one.

We're not expecting everyone to submit polished pieces that had hours and hours of time spent on them. If you don't have much time, consider doing a pencil sketch, or a black and white paint concept (I wish I had an example handy to show on the awesome work you can do with thick brushes and black + white paint in photoshop). Have a go, people! (and yes, this applies to myself as well, I'm currently on the hunt for a gfx tablet).

LOL self-portraits, my last cruddy submission was a self-portrait, but since I don't have any time to draw anything new because I've got too many assignments to do I guess I can at least post a couple of self portraits I've sketched into my design journal since yer, I'm pretty self obsessed.

For some reason I had to reformat my PC and now I have no photoshop, and I can't use paint , here's the sketches of my self-obsession.

I'm looking forward to green alien month
So I can draw something new

Normal map crate challange - codyalday

Will start the crate later tonight, but this is some playing around I have done with Normal Mapping.

Looks really good man :)
Did you do the little dents and stuff on the mesh or did you add them later? Can we see a wireframe of the lowpoly base for the high?
And a bigger pic of the finished piece!!

Submitted by shika on Fri, 05/05/06 - 6:56 AMPermalink

thanks :) scratched metal is a bit of a cop-out, but its fun to do.

i did the dents and larger scratches in zbrush, the finer scratches were done with the nvidia normal map filter

ill post the finished thing on the weekend, but for now here's the high poly and the wire, the high poly after z brush, and the low poly without the normal map

Normal map crate challange - Makk

Here is my entry for this little challenge...

The high poly is mostly finished, just got to go and get some finer detials like rivets, etc and finish off the top of it (the lid).

One of the bits I have found to be hard is generating the normal map and being able to view it in MAX7. I grabbed some shaders from Ben Clowards site so I'll see how they go

I'll be using a diffuse, spec and possibly spec colour in addition.

Submitted by Makk on Mon, 08/05/06 - 8:58 AMPermalink

Im currently up to the stage that Ive been having the most trouble with, that is rendering the normal map and displaying it in MAX7.
And whatta know I have a problem.
For some reason, shading from the low poly's smoothing is showing up in the normal map...

Why is this happening?

Submitted by J I Styles on Mon, 08/05/06 - 10:01 PMPermalink

First thing first - Have you checked the map on the object? If not, you may find that it's visually correct.

Depending on your low poly target, it should be right. The normal map is the resulting difference from the low poly normals to the high poly normals -- unless something's off, this should be correct.

As to why that happens, think of it as compensating for the low poly by putting opposing values to the low polys normals, therefore making it correct in comparison to the high poly source. Since it's tangent space, it's still using the base low poly's normals + the normal map to equal the final normal - another example is if you had a faceted low poly mesh ripping a smooth high poly then it'd compensate in the normal map and it'd still come out visually smooth even if you can see all the faceted crap in the normal map.

Now, that -should- be why it's happening -- if it's screwy with it applied to the low poly then there's another prob

Yup just make sure your high poly teture isn't the same as the low poly texture. ie. make sure its just a default sphere in the materials window away from the one that the low poly is using and not a copy of the low poly texture as well ><.

Also make sure you have your low poly set to one smoothing group.

If you run the normal map on the low poly in both real time and via render, and it still does that then you will have to try and re render it using the methods mentioned already in this thread.

if it still happens post a screen of your render to texture dialog box + option and we will be able to see if its any of those that might be causeing the problem.

Normal map crate challenge

With the upcoming Sumea challange, I thought it might be a good idea to get some practice in with making normal map art assests before the comp begins. This way you can get your feet wet with something small before diving in with a full blown character.

Basicly you just have to make a normal mapped crate of some kind. Pretty simple but at the same time you can have a go at getting some pretty good detialling in there as well.

The specs of the challenge are as follows...

1. high poly source model to generate the normal map from. Any poly budget is (obviously)
ok.

2. A low poly version of your high poly source. This can be any budget but you probbly should stay as low as possible. This is the model that the normal map texture is applied to.

3. 1 1024 normal and diffuse map. Any other maps are optional though its probably a good enough just to go with the above 2 and a specular map in addition.

So there are the challange requirements. There is no deadline but you would probably want to finish this before the Sumea challange starts; which is about june-mid june somewhere.

hehe I still have my pet normal mapped rock which I never submited.lol at me.:(

Activity 3 - Normal mapping a Rock - IronhideNT

Bit late on the activity but finally got there. Spent most of my time trying to get to grips with the tools in Zbrush. This is meant to be a canyon type rock formation, 790 something tris, normal, spec and colour map.

Point is, if I ever want to model a chocolate easter bunny, I'll know exactly what settings to have[:p]

It looked promising for awhile in Zbrush but after I slotted it back into Maya, it became more of a let down - but I decided to post it up anyway before it got stuck inside my harddrive never to be edited again.

I was thinking though, on colour maps, how do you get an accurate idea of where the bumps are to match the elements of the colour map with the normal map? Do people just export the nomral map, take it into Photoshop and just paint over the top of it?

For the specular map, all I did was take the normal map, desatuarated it and just put it into my specular colour. Is there a specular map creation feature in zbrush?

Any tips or suggestions or comments or whatever would be great!!

Looking nice man, seems like you figured normal mapping out nicely. Nice design of the rock too. Keep it up please.
