Sumea Paint Activity3 - IronhideNT
Rightio, Erm, Cyborg for 3? Anyway, when I think Cyborg, I think Star Trek Borg. The only thing I remember though is the poor people they assimulate and the inner struggles they face as a Borg?
Originally I just wanted a bust / head composition, but now I think it's a little boring and I want abit more of the body. But I though I'd post a progress sketch before I overwork it.

Hello... I decided to knuckle down and finish this in one hit or else it'll drag on and never get finished!!
My self portrait is based on my new hair style (or at least what I think it would look like eventually).
Self Esteem problems? Absolutely!
Great work everyone!
Sumea Paint Activity2 - Makk
Just playing with textures in PS, trying to get used to painting with CS2
EDIT: Small update belowMakk2007-05-16 19:50:43
nice variety of moods and techniques Makk. The first on is particularly good with the texture, mood and technique all matching up.
I know what you mean about the colour picker interface in Painter too, but I guess their reasoning might be that you can mix colours on a palette or the canvas mimicking how you work with natural media.

Colourful yet with a touch of pathos, just like me.

self portrait with a (green alien) twist!
A little under 90mins of solid painting. Would have liked to add in some more detail and a background but that would have taken the time well and truely beyond the scope of a quick activity.
sumea paint activity #2
Hope all is good in ur hood thought id jump in on the action. 30 mins, coulda spent longer but that would made it a Sumea not so quick Activity.
Looking forward to the next one, or i might add another one, guess we'll see.

Click on the "Insert Image" button (picture of a camera.
When you do this, a box should come up asking for a URL to your picture. should look something like the one I just posted.
If your computer won't let you use the "Insert Image" option then post the URL into the forum and I'll upload it for you.
Yeh tried all of that before and no go so if you could do an upload for me that would be great!

And once you posted it you might as well let me know what you think. Cheers.

First blood!! first sketch
Haha, cool, you could take it either way and get a nice result at the end. Personally I like the absurd man-fish idea, but that's just personal preference.
For the whale idea I think your second last image post was going the right way about it. Having the ribcage of the whale painted up behind the ship (I'm guessing that's what those strokes of colour are?). The perspective on the ribs looks good to me, so I'd just paint them up all shiny and veiny. Or you could just put a hook and lure in your guy's mouth and call him a legendary man-fish...

Well here we go, my last minute submit. It's been a long week . I sketched this during my Data Com lecture. I cut out the notes in photoshop so that's why the top guy has no stomach.
I was trying out different poses so sorry about the horrible neer-anime style.
I think I'll go further with the guy on the bottom left. What do you think?

a small start with some ideas. I hope I can find the time to complete a finshed piece for this activity.
is that a dare to draw an erect penis Sorceror Bob? ...maybe it's lucky that I finished the drawing before reading you edited post!
anyways- finished drawing. If time permits I will attempt to add some colour.

Sumea Paint Activity #1 - Neffy
From fear of Souris wrath here?s my little sketch
My tablet is broken so its hard to draw things :(
I used to draw with the mouse for years... I ain't going back to that again! (I used to draw using a joystick back in the C64 days as well, and let's just say I'm glad those days are over too). I haven't had the time to hunt around for a new cheap wacom, but if anyone has some links and suggestions, please do send it my way. I want in this activity as well!
Picture coming along nicely, Neffy, but damnit, why are you hurting yourself like this? MS Paint *and* drawing with a mouse? o_O
Im used to using a mouse, cause when your doing max and stuff its a pain to change from mouse to pen just to add a little highlight to that part of the texture. So being the lazy thing that I am I just keep using the mouse
But wow a joystick ! that would be interesting to use. Did they have Paint back then ??
Here was the first pic i did in paint XD
Sumea Paint Activity #1 - IronhideNT
Hello! I'll give this one a go. I usually stick to character side of things but this time I want to try full compositions. (It'll at least improve my perspective!)
So. "Nude. Angel". I came up with this sorta story in response to that.
Philbus, the Love Angel came down gracefully from the heavens to join Prince McArthur and Princess McAndrew in holy matromony. As the confetti flew, Philbus knew his job was done and flew away never to be seen again.
"Goodbye my sweet couple" he said, "goodbye. May love find you all"...the Royal guests all looked up to catch a last glimpse of him.
They got more than what they bargained for...
Sumea Paint Activity #1 - oco
Heres a quick sketch to get the ball rolling. A slight variant on the Icarus tale. Making my start! Lets see what you've got...

New Sumea Paint Activity
Would anyone be interested in a new monthly Sumea paint activity?
It's something we could run once a month and have all the contributions placed in a nice gallery for comment and viewing etc?
I'm a bit over my head with stuff to do on the site at the moment, but we'll definitely get this off sometime near the beginning of next year.
I also want to do some sort of "member focus" that I've mentioned around here ages ago. A likely set of interviews on Sumea profile members on their work etc for the Sumea Creative section. We need to get some of the art activities happening back on the site!
Ok, I'm starting our new monthly paint activity NOW. This is your assignment for this month. Everyone is required to join in the fun, otherwise I will get *very upset*.
For this entire month, I want all participants to concentrate on this topic. You can spend as much time or as little time as you like. But in the end, I want to see something from everyone. You can provide sketches, you can do a speed paint, or if you have a tonne of time to spare, you could do a full blown complete piece. It's up to you. The thing is, you have to try. If you don't, I will be very disappointed. I don't care if you think you suck or not. Give it a go!
The topic for this month is this: A nude man with wings. Yes, we have a nude figure with wings on the Sumea main page, and you can use that for inspiration if you like, or you can go completely off on another tangent. Up to you! Just make it interesting!!!!
Post your thread in this section of the forum (Sumea Quick Activities). Name it:
Paint Activity #1: (Your name)
The size of your canvas is 1000x800 pixels. At the end of the month, I'm going to compile all the pics and place them in a special viewing gallery on Sumea!!Souri2007-03-01 07:43:59
Here's my contrib (yer I'm a programmer, not an artist):
Not gonna put it in its own thread... Should we be keeping all of the paint activity related stuff inside the pain activity thread anyways?
PS: LOL this is the first time I've ever actually painted something in photoshop - I've read tuts and that on it but I never actually went and did it - yays for quick activities.
We'll go with Makk's on for the time being. I'm more than happy to go with green alien for the next one. We had a good number of people participating in the previous activity, and I hope even more people at least have a go with this one.
We're not expecting everyone to submit polished pieces that had hours and hours of time spent on them. If you don't have much time, consider doing a pencil sketch, or a black and white paint concept (I wish I had an example handy to show on the awesome work you can do with thick brushes and black + white paint in photoshop). Have a go, people! (and yes, this applies to myself as well, I'm currently on the hunt for a gfx tablet).
LOL self-portraits, my last cruddy submission was a self-portrait, but since I don't have any time to draw anything new because I've got too many assignments to do I guess I can at least post a couple of self portraits I've sketched into my design journal since yer, I'm pretty self obsessed.
For some reason I had to reformat my PC and now I have no photoshop, and I can't use paint , here's the sketches of my self-obsession.
I'm looking forward to green alien month
So I can draw something new
Normal map crate challange - codyalday
Will start the crate later tonight, but this is some playing around I have done with Normal Mapping.
[img]http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/attached/codyalday/200651063225_NormalMap…]
Started the canister tonight, around 1hr or so work. Will do a texture and touch up the normal map. The low poly model is 210 triangles, and the high poly is 2530 triangles. Comments and crits appriciated.

Normal map crate challange - Shika
here be the high poly crate plus a canister of something. pre z-brush

I thought itd be fun to make it really dingy :D
ill finish it later and do a proper render, this is just a screen grab

thanks :) scratched metal is a bit of a cop-out, but its fun to do.
i did the dents and larger scratches in zbrush, the finer scratches were done with the nvidia normal map filter
ill post the finished thing on the weekend, but for now here's the high poly and the wire, the high poly after z brush, and the low poly without the normal map

Normal map crate challange - Makk
Here is my entry for this little challenge...

The high poly is mostly finished, just got to go and get some finer detials like rivets, etc and finish off the top of it (the lid).
One of the bits I have found to be hard is generating the normal map and being able to view it in MAX7. I grabbed some shaders from Ben Clowards site so I'll see how they go
I'll be using a diffuse, spec and possibly spec colour in addition.
Ok, so this is going to be my high poly base...

Might add some smaller detials iwth the PS normal map filter.
Im currently up to the stage that Ive been having the most trouble with, that is rendering the normal map and displaying it in MAX7.
And whatta know I have a problem.
For some reason, shading from the low poly's smoothing is showing up in the normal map...

Why is this happening?
First thing first - Have you checked the map on the object? If not, you may find that it's visually correct.
Depending on your low poly target, it should be right. The normal map is the resulting difference from the low poly normals to the high poly normals -- unless something's off, this should be correct.
As to why that happens, think of it as compensating for the low poly by putting opposing values to the low polys normals, therefore making it correct in comparison to the high poly source. Since it's tangent space, it's still using the base low poly's normals + the normal map to equal the final normal - another example is if you had a faceted low poly mesh ripping a smooth high poly then it'd compensate in the normal map and it'd still come out visually smooth even if you can see all the faceted crap in the normal map.
Now, that -should- be why it's happening -- if it's screwy with it applied to the low poly then there's another prob
Yup just make sure your high poly teture isn't the same as the low poly texture. ie. make sure its just a default sphere in the materials window away from the one that the low poly is using and not a copy of the low poly texture as well ><.
Also make sure you have your low poly set to one smoothing group.
If you run the normal map on the low poly in both real time and via render, and it still does that then you will have to try and re render it using the methods mentioned already in this thread.
if it still happens post a screen of your render to texture dialog box + option and we will be able to see if its any of those that might be causeing the problem.
Ahh, now I understand. Thnaks for clearing that up :)
I think I have pretty much finished this one...

Might tweak some areas of the normal map and spec, but they really wont show much difference.
I will also probably do another one, though it might not be a crate.
Normal map crate challenge
With the upcoming Sumea challange, I thought it might be a good idea to get some practice in with making normal map art assests before the comp begins. This way you can get your feet wet with something small before diving in with a full blown character.
Basicly you just have to make a normal mapped crate of some kind. Pretty simple but at the same time you can have a go at getting some pretty good detialling in there as well.
The specs of the challenge are as follows...
1. high poly source model to generate the normal map from. Any poly budget is (obviously)
ok.
2. A low poly version of your high poly source. This can be any budget but you probbly should stay as low as possible. This is the model that the normal map texture is applied to.
3. 1 1024 normal and diffuse map. Any other maps are optional though its probably a good enough just to go with the above 2 and a specular map in addition.
So there are the challange requirements. There is no deadline but you would probably want to finish this before the Sumea challange starts; which is about june-mid june somewhere.

Activity 3 - Normal mapping a Rock - IronhideNT
Bit late on the activity but finally got there. Spent most of my time trying to get to grips with the tools in Zbrush. This is meant to be a canyon type rock formation, 790 something tris, normal, spec and colour map.

Point is, if I ever want to model a chocolate easter bunny, I'll know exactly what settings to have[:p]
It looked promising for awhile in Zbrush but after I slotted it back into Maya, it became more of a let down - but I decided to post it up anyway before it got stuck inside my harddrive never to be edited again.
I was thinking though, on colour maps, how do you get an accurate idea of where the bumps are to match the elements of the colour map with the normal map? Do people just export the nomral map, take it into Photoshop and just paint over the top of it?
For the specular map, all I did was take the normal map, desatuarated it and just put it into my specular colour. Is there a specular map creation feature in zbrush?
Any tips or suggestions or comments or whatever would be great!!
