Is it over for www.bigkid.com.au ??

  • In my first and previous post in this game dev log entry, I had written that I wanted to do a game which was a collection of simple retro games. Unity released a new major release (2019.3) while I was putting the initial project together, and I…

  • Well, I'm making a game . I'm spending the next few weeks on making a small game to showcase the gamedev log feature on tsumea where any member can create a game entry and other members can post journal posts with art, music or just development…

  • Just a test #2. Still working on the new section.

  • So, I got a Commodore 64 when I was in the 4th grade. It came bundled with a Rolf Harris picture building program on casette tape which never loaded properly but from what I could tell by its box cover, you could build pictures from a selection…

  • Yes, the site looks very different and I've had to prematurely switch to this new theme that I'm working on for a few reasons, the main one is that changing certain aspects of the site to fit the new theme will affect how the old one looks for…

  • (this is just a test, please ignore this entry)

Here is some of my old work.. the first pic is of a 3d model of a human head I was working on about 2 years ago in 3dsmax, using nurbs. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't model a head with…

All I get is a password prompt now.. previously, there were PHP errors aplenty on the site. Anyone have word on the situation?
Bigkid was one of the early sites that covered some local industry stuff, with interviews and developer listings, but mostly concentrated on games news..

I got the same thing today, maybe they're remodelling the site.

Personally even though it was a nice australian site, I think ausgamers is being kept up with the news a bit more.

Maybe I just didn't get the bigkid thing?

I've noticed that the news gradually got reported less and less often.. maybe they just eventually got sick of fixing / managing a website, after all those memory allocation errors (I think) that were popping up.. *shrugs*

Apparently their provider is having problems hosting the site on a new server.

Ah.. thanks for clearing that up, Steve.

Splash is a good mate of mine ... been meaning to ask him what's been going on there, BigKid has been a bit wonky for a while. He's a busy guy, but it would be a shame if the site folded.

Due to unbelievable incompetence on the part of our host, BigKid will be down for a few more days. Hypermax (I don't recommend them) reconfigured their server and discovered they had broken our site, and couldn't fix it. Apparently they know diddly squat about PHP and even tried telling us it was something we had done (!) Needless to say, we're a bit peeved. We have hooked up a new host and are just waiting for the domain to redirect.

Strangely though, I think it's turned out to be a good thing. We are all very busy in the industry now and can't afford the 4+ hours a day to keep the site as it was current. Also, sites like Sumea have picked up the baton and are doing a better job anyway. We have done a bit of talking and have come up with some interesting ideas revolving around our ability now to report on the industry from within. Bruce is in London and can't provide the sort of maintenance time he used to, but he's fairly keen to work on a slighty new format. We still are enthusiastic about BigKid, and don't want to let it just slide, despite the recent lack of content.

I'm also very keen to get all our old content in the new database so it is accessible again. That's 100's of hours worth of work, but having immersed myself in SQL recently, I might be able to do it reasonably painlessly. We'll see.

Thanks for the continued interest in BigKid. We worked very hard for several years to get the site known, and I for one won't let that dribble away into nothing. Not while it's still immensely enjoyable and rewarding to be a part of the industry from both sides.

Great to hear, monty! There'd be some serious arse kicking if BigKid shut down... @;-)

Well, we're back up. Slightly different format - we're a blog now, which means we are probably going to editorialize a bit more than we have in the past. We hear lots of stuff about the industry at work, the trick is going to be sorting out what we can report without getting ourselves in trouble :)

There's been a few things I've been privy to which I have dared not mentioned on the site.. some are just better left unposted. I'd hate to come under some serious wrath if I did. [:)]
Anyway, good luck with Bigkid (I see it's back up already!) [:)]
