kool!

is it legal to plan the game as much as we can before we start coding?[:D]

Great, another 48 hour challenge! :)

I'm about to participate in my first Game in a Day event on GarageGames, programming what is more likely going to be a gameplay demo more than an actual game. The theme for this one is "geometric primitives", but even that's optional. You can use any language or library.

Are there to be any restrictions on this challenge? I would suggest making it informal and setting guidelines as opposed to restrictions, that way people can work the way they know how (but can try something different if they feel so inclined).

Just my thoughts, anyhow.

Yeh, I think it would be best to post the topic/theme closer to the date of the challenge. [:)].. Haven't chosen one yet, but I'll have a look at what's suggested/most popular before the challenge starts.

btw, I'll be putting the programmer challenge #1 results on the Sumea Challenge page a bit later.. Just been a tad busy.

Submitted by Strik3r on Tue, 22/06/04 - 11:21 AM Permalink

I think it would be best to leave at least the platform / api used open as per the last programming challenge. That way the Direct X / GL coders wont have any issues and no one has to go and learn an entire new platform like GBA if they dont want to.

I'd love to see a challenge where programmers and modellers are paired together. What about drawing names out of a hat to create teams ?? oh and yea, keep it to 48 hours. makes things interesting

Submitted by Maitrek on Thu, 24/06/04 - 12:11 AM Permalink

I guess it is supposed to be a challenge after all - if we want to use another platform like GBA for example, then it would be nice to know *now* rather than later, at this stage I'm guessing it's going to be left open???

Agreed. That way more people will take part; some people probably won't compete if they have to learn a new platform.

Making a fun game in only 48 hours *is* a challenge, whether we use a new platform or not.

I'll still take part either way, just my two cents.

Submitted by Kane on Tue, 29/06/04 - 12:46 AM Permalink

so are you going to chose the theme Souri? or will we post themes then you will choose the best?

and is it ok to plan before we start the challenge?

Submitted by souri on Tue, 29/06/04 - 5:53 AM Permalink

I'll post the theme sometime on Thursday.. you can prepare all you want in your head, I guess. [;)] Probably not fair to lay out some code or whatever yet..

Submitted by Soul on Tue, 29/06/04 - 7:26 AM Permalink

Just so I'm clear on this - the challenge is over the Saturday & Sunday, right??

48 Hour Challenge #2 - Kane

It sure is pretty quiet around here!

Submitted by Maitrek on Sat, 03/07/04 - 11:06 AM Permalink

Yeah, I kinda got stuck with three shifts over this fri, sat, sun at the pizza store and I'm struggling to figure out what to do with the subject...

It's a nice topic but maybe I'll have to 'pass' due to exhaustion!

:(

Maybe I'll spend my spare time putting my car back together, hehehe.

Submitted by Maitrek on Sat, 03/07/04 - 11:13 AM Permalink

After hearing cries of being a total pansy, I'm being roped back into doing the challenge...

That and I just think I hit a good idea for the game too.

Submitted by MattD on Sat, 03/07/04 - 10:34 PM Permalink

unfortunately due to the fact that im on a plane to south africa on monday, and im still packing my apartment up, im not going to be able to compete :(

oh well, theres allways next time..

i will judge some of the entries though, god knows ill need the break :P

good luck ya'll! :)

It's a shame it's so quiet :( - I'm wondering if a longer challenge may have encouraged more people to try...

Still, maybe there are a couple more challengers quietly working away without telling anyone yet? Hope so!

Submitted by TheBigJ on Sun, 04/07/04 - 9:30 PM Permalink

I'm afraid I wasn't able to take part in this one after all..

Good luck to the challengers, I'll make sure to judge the entries when they're done.

Submitted by Maitrek on Sun, 04/07/04 - 10:33 PM Permalink

I think all sumean programmers should wear a 'poor effort' hat for the rest of the week.

Except for Kane.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Mon, 05/07/04 - 5:33 AM Permalink

dear god, after all this theres only one entrant :o

dont let that stop you from making a good game then kane :D

Submitted by Kane on Mon, 05/07/04 - 7:47 AM Permalink

haha...well, its not really that good...(at all)

keep in mind it's my first go at a side scroller, if you could call it that... [:p]

i'm posting it very soon so look out for it! [:D]

Submitted by Maitrek on Mon, 05/07/04 - 8:22 AM Permalink

Me and Soul will try and post something up by the end of the week but obviously it won't be eligible for the comp...it's just this topic was kinda funky and fun and I'm pretty pleased with what we've come up with so far.

I'm just saying I was put off by the topic.

I wouldn't mind knowing though what other peoples reasons were.

I basically had the whole weekend to myself for the first time in a long time. When I saw that a competition was brewing last week, I thought yeah great I might have a go. But when I found out the topic I decended to just do some more coding on my engine.
