Senior Programmer
Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior programmer to work on upcoming industry-leading titles including Tribes:Vengeance and others. This position is open to candidates with several years experience in the games industry or related field.
Irrational programmers are responsible for designing and implementing our game technology. At Irrational, programmers are a significant part of the game design process, so you should be passionately interested in game development as well as writing great code.
Irrational believes in cutting-edge technology married to great game design. We are particularly interested in programmers who have both technical skills and care about how that technology can be used to make games more fun.
Responsibilities:
1. work with the game designer and the lead programmer to produce technical design documents and schedules
2. write, document and test code to implement the technical design
3. liase with design and art teams to ensure that code addresses their technical needs
4. research technology to ensure that Irrational products remain at the forefront of games technology
5. take responsibility for one or more major areas of a game or piece of technology
6. supervise junior or mid-level programmers as required
7. review and critique code design and implementation from other programmers
8. contribute to the ongoing evolution of the software development process at IGA.
Required Experience and Skills:
1. excellent understanding of C/C++
2. good understanding of OO design principles
3. communication skills and interest in working with our game developers in a cooperative team environment
4. commitment to code quality, documentation and sound testing proceedures
5. interest in game development and game technology
Additional Experience and Skills (desired but not necessary):
6. tertiary educational qualifications in computer science and mathematics
7. working knowledge or better or 3D rendering principles including principles of rendering pipelines, 3D transforms and linear algebra, DirectX APIs and current generation 3D graphics hardware and drivers.

Junior Level Designer
Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented junior designer to work on upcoming titles including Tribes: Vengeance?. This is a level design position, so the majority of your work will be designing, building and play-testing levels, however, all designers are also expected to contribute to the overall game design and the design process at Irrational.
Level designers are directly responsible for creating gameplay through level building and scripting. You will need to combine a strong aesthetic sense and interest in creating visually interesting spaces with an ability to understand how gameplay is created. You will also need to possess the technical skills to ensure that your levels work within the constraints of the game technology.
As a level designer, you will be directly supervised by the lead level designer who will review your work and determine if it is artistically and technically sufficient to use in the final product. In addition, you will be required to work with designers and programmers to ensure that your art is appropriate for the game design.
At Irrational, we are currently working with Unreal Warfare? technology to create Tribes: Vengeance? and other titles. Experience with this technology building mods or commercial products will be highly valued but similar experience with other technologies, like Half-Life? or Quake?, is also valued. Candidates who have worked on creating levels for mods are highly encouraged to apply for this position.
Required skills
- understanding of contemporary 3D first-person engine technologies and editing tools
- experience creating first-person levels using Unreal, Quake, Half-Life or similar technologies, commercially or otherwise (this must be demonstrated through actual levels created for these engines)
- understanding of and desire to create first-person shooter gameplay
-interest in and understanding of architecture, lighting, texturing and other elements that are required to create aesthetically pleasing 3D levels
-ability to use basic programming or scripting tools
-ability to meet deadlines
-ability to work and contribute effectively in a team environment
good communication skills
As a game designer, you are expected to also have a wider interest in game design and creation and you will be expected to continue to refine these skills.
