Startupsmart.com.au reports that Federal Arts Minister, Simon Crean, will make the case for extending the 40% producer tax rebate enjoyed by the films sector to the games industry to the expenditure review committee before the next budget. The 40% producer tax rebate was successful in securing film productions such as Happy Feet Two and The Great Gatsby and it's hoped to spark similar revitalising activity for local games developers.
Startupsmart reveals that the 40% tax rebate for games development has a staunch supporter in film director, George Miller. From Startupsmart.com.au...
Miller hopes to bolster production at his Sydney-based Dr D studio by branching into games, including the next project from the maker of popular Australian game LA Noire.
Crean believes he has a strong case for the extension of the producer rebate to the games, commenting on the connection the games industry has to the film sector...
Until I went to George Miller's studios... I hadn't understood the extension of the film industry to the game industry," he said. "It's a logical extension to what we've already proved our worth at and the international market already values.
