Just be careful to read any small print regarding who takes ownership of IP's developed in the studio. Make sure no ownership of the IP passes to Redtribe, same with royalties from game sales. It should be you pay rent for the space and nothing else, and hopefully that is how it is. But it just pays to be wary.

There is no transfer of intellectual property involved for the facility or equipment use.

Redtribe's aim is to create a positive environment where small start-up businesses can work with each other and benefit from contact with each other and Redtribe staff. If there is a way we can help start-ups to form and grow, we're happy to help. This is how we started out.

When we first started Redtribe we were looking for something like this and there was nothing available. it can be extremely difficult breaking into the game development business/industry and hopefully this is just one little part of the puzzle.

The last year has been very tough for the Australian industry, but things will slowly start to turn around as publishers become less shy about investing in new games. It will be a very different landscape to what we have had in the past, but I believe there are really great opportunities for Australian game development in the future.

I don't know how offering cheap rent, free use of equipment and support, can be ripping people off....?? Whoever moves in, can move out, if they are not happy. It's a month by month rental agreement. There are no mean contracts. That is not the point of what we are trying to do. We are trying to do something positive for the local industry. There is a fantastic space and great equipment, and it seems crazy not to have this put to use, by the people who may need it most.

Chris Mosely has no intension of taking anyone's IP, or ripping anyone off.
It's a positive and fun space, with room to include a jumping castle, climbing wall, and lap pool. There is nothing negative about that!!

I reckon would be fantastic for those that can take it up,
just being around like minded people in that sort of setting would be a great benefit.

I thought I should chime in with my own impressions of the place since I've been there to check it out and I met both Kirsten and Chris. For a start, they have NO INTEREST IN STEALING YOUR IP!! so chill.

I hadn't met them before this week, and we got along really well. Kirsten and Chris are really welcoming and accommodating and they were really happy to help us out. Frankly, they seem like great people.

The office is in the absolute centre of the CBD but just out of the insanely busy areas we wanted to avoid, so the location is amazing. I could list everything thats good about it, but instead just come in to see it. The only thing I could add is that they're pretty flexible and the list is just stuff on offer if you want it.

Although, I'm sure they can explain it better than me, I think they want to see a small creative hub of indie studios all making cool games and feeding off each other. I don't mean working on each others games, (we're pretty happy with our team as it is thank you), but working in the same office as other devs is waaaay better than sharing an office with some . We've rented a shoebox in the HWT tower, and that was shit. We've sub-leased from Exit Reality and that was good but unfortunately had to end. And now... our third office is in the Red Tribe Industry Cluster!! :D

oh yes... and we're The Voxel Agents and we're making iPhone games. Matt, Tom and I have all had experience in the games industry at various companies and we're making a serious effort of setting up a new studio. We launched our second title, Train Conductor, a month ago, check us out at www.thevoxelagents.com

Personally, I'm going to do a shout out to all other creative indies and say... join us! it will be an interesting ride and it would be good to share the experiences with like minded people...

sorry I forgot to mention that bit. I'm a co-founder and designer at The Voxel Agents. And in case you didn't pick it up, I have no prior affiliation with Red Tribe. I'll post more impressions once we've moved in on Tuesday. And I will be careful to read the fine print (thanks for the heads up).

Train Conductor has been doing pretty well, I last saw it sitting at #16 in the top paid apps in Australia so congrats! I'm looking forwards to big things from you guys!! Mik Dobele.

I hope they give you a discount for that positive note Simon. It sounds like a great space and a good idea.

To those people that seem pretty skeptical about redtribe "stealing IP's" get your facts straight before passing judgement.

In my experience, Chris is a very transparent, fair and level headed fellow, and for some reason people seem keen to bag on him and redtribe when it isn't warrented. Sure he is also a business man as well, and he has a business to run, but he's been through a lot this past year in having to let go of a lot of his previous employees that were working on a very promising game that if it had seen the light of day, would definitely have been a contender on the international scene.

I think him and redtribe in general offering this just shows how much chris cares about the local industry and wants to see it get back on its feet and grow by offering people a really great deal and opportunity to form some kind of start-up without having to resort to it being in someone's garage. He's been there and knows how difficult something like that can be.

And it is a really good space, check it out and meet with chris and kirsten, ask them lots of questions (I know they will answer them as succinctly as they can), don't just pass comment without knowing what you are talking about.

It's really nice to get a message like this ( your cheque is in the mail ;) ).
I have to say I really appreciated it Anonymous.

I will keep trying to do my part, I really look forward to see what the new generation of developers comes up with too :)

Open question to Chris,

Sorry for the bluntness, but you either own the space or you have a finite amount of time left on your lease and cant break it. Important info to some people perhaps?

Otherwise sounds like a promising deal.

Submitted by cmlibra on Tue, 19/01/10 - 12:50 PMPermalink

I think this is a good question :)

Without going into all the boring details, suffice to say that the office is fully owned by a separate entity to REDTRIBE which we have complete control of, so there is no lease or finite amount of time, etc. This means we have a great deal of flexibility when it comes to the space.

Hopefully that helps ?

If I had the money to pursue this I totally would. But being a indie-team of 2 people though makes us a little to small to look into this at the current moment.

But still. Nice work to all who got this together and all who are pursuing it. Having up to 3 indie studios in the same place will allow for some productive collaborations.

There have been some requests regarding single desks in the open plan area.

We are open to leasing out single desks also, or clusters of desks in the open plan area. Some people enjoy working in an open plan space more than in a shut off office environment and it works well with the whole industry cluster idea.

We will look at this on a case-by-case basis depending on the number of desks a group may require (or an individual).

We are looking at providing a discount for groups as the group size increases. This is because there is less overhead cost for us (e.g. we only have to deal with one entity to manage several desks as opposed to handling more people and managing individual desks directly).

So in summary, you can also rent a single desk in the open plan spaces. Security is not an issue as everyone is issued with electronic swipe cards and there is 24/7 video surveillance of all areas within the building.

As an sound designer type guy, a single desk with at least a partitioned off area is kind of a must for me. I've passed up many such offers here in Perth in the past because they could not offer separate space.

Thinking about moving over to Melbourne though, and this sounds like the perfect sort of set up to get involved with a bunch of new developers.

Submitted by cmlibra on Fri, 29/01/10 - 4:53 PMPermalink

Yes we can provide separate space for this also.

I can imagine a sound producer could provide a lot of assistance to other companies in the cluster.

We're all setup and very happy with the office :D
Everyone has been helpful, internet is lightning fast and reliable, and the office is very comfortable.

The space is starting to fill and the biscuits in the tin are quickly being eaten by the gamer boys, and all seem rather happy! Do come and join us!

This is a majorly cool development. Mad props to RedTribe for their altruism in helping to give others a leg up and I hope that if any who make use of RedTribe's offer make it big they'll repay the favour somehow. If only such facilities were available all around Australia!

Thanks for the positive feedback! If things go well here, we do plan to expand interstate. So stay tunned!!!

For others in Melbourne working from home or in a dark and dingy office with a mean receptionist, do consider popping down to have a look at our space. It's bright, comfortable, with free flowing coffee, and a happy happy always smiling receptionist! The prices are cheeeeeap, and include everything. If you can gather together a team of 4 or more, the desk price goes down to $75 each (plus gst) - which includes everything (inc all you eat buscuits (timtams too!!)!! "THAT"S NUTS" I hear you say.... well yes, it is. And nuts can be provided too if there is a high enough demand!!
