See that lonely figure up there? That's me. That can also be you too!
We had an irc java applet on the old Sumea site for years, and while we had some great times in there (particularly with the organised developer chats), it wasn't used very often otherwise. The java applet was also a pain in the butt to update all the time, and since this new fandangled Lively service from Google reared its head, I thought it would be a great replacement for our old irc chat. I'm totally diggin the character models, their animation, and the GUI as well!
Download the Google Lively plugin at http://www.lively.com and hop into our chat page (click on the chat icon up there, or the link at the end of this news item). Feel free to hop in anytime if you need to organise some sort of live group discussion! We might hold some gatherings in there from time to time, particularly tsumea modeller challenge deadline nights and events like that.
And yes, that's one of our youtube video's streaming there!!
Consider my brain exploded!
Ok, Google Lively is *awesome*.
Although people have been scoffing this as another Second Life clone, I have to add that there is some great potential behind all of this, mainly due to the ability to stream stuff off youtube. If they can manage to get playlists available (so you can create viewing programs and have a variety of videos playing), and some way for visitors to change channels in there, then I'm seriously going to freak.
I mean, people watch youTube all the time, but imagine a place where you could watch film and comment on them with a room full of other people online at the same time? Sure, you could open up youTube and an irc client etc, but this is much more convenient for hosts to premiere their own short films and whatever in front of a virtual audience and set a certain time for it.
Also, it would be a great interactive way to show off something. Imagine if you could walk around with your avatar and view video different streams of your choice. It would be a much more enjoyable experience to view all our videos like that in some sort of logically organised environment, rather than finding it from =randomly listed thumbnails at our youtube channel.
Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward in seeing where they push all of this.
I tried Google Lively. I
I tried Google Lively. I just ran around slapping women. Does this make me a bad person?
