The 48 hour game making challenge concluded yesterday, with the winning team announced! The judges, which consisted of John Passfield (Creative Director at Pandemic Studios), Gordon Moyes (Executive Producer with Krome Studios), Jackie Turnure (Head of Development and Production at Hoodlum) and Yahtzee, looked over all the games submitted and chose the six manned team Sif90 for their very creative 'Melonauts' game, with honourable mentions going to the teams of Echidna, Pre-Emptive Revenge, Lurker’s Craft & Laserback Turtles. Congratulations, guys!
This year's line up for sif90 were:
* Tom Killen
* Matt Clark
* Michael Szewczyk
* Simon Joslin
* Jon McEwan
* Joe Gatling
Team sif90 takes out the prize for the second year in a row, so they certainly do have a nack for getting some quality stuff done under gruelling conditions. I saw a bit of 'Melonauts' via the live feed at the 48hour website, and it looked a whole lot of fun! As I supplied the three keywords (Watermelon, Astronaught, and Summertime), I was very curious as to how teams would tackle the third word, Summertime. I chose it because I wanted a word that was ambigious and open, and wanted to see how the various challengers would interpret that visually. The sif90 guys came up with a very excellent way to express that word, so kudos to whoever came up with that idea!
I've popped into the live feed and blog occasionally over the weekend to see some of the work that was happening, and there've been some great concepts, art, and ideas from all the entrants, and I'm looking forward to grabbing them for a look from the 48hour website when they're released next week! All in all, it was a very exciting competition, and I am absolutely thrilled to have been involved in a little tiny bit of it! Here's to the next challenge, with the hope of even more teams taking part (this year had a whopping 14 or so teams!), and a huge round of applause for Truna and everyone else for their work on organising such an awesome event!
Anyway, AustralianGamer has some great coverage of the event, so check out Yug's write up of the closing hours of the competition with plenty of pictures at AustralianGamer.com!
