Serious Games for Serious Purposes
A regional first, the purpose of the SimTecT Serious Games Showcase & Challenge – Australia and New Zealand is to promote Australia and New Zealand’s considerable and innovative development talent, and represent interactive serious game solutions nationally and internationally. SimTecT 2012 will be the first time that this competition has been run outside of the annual I/ITSEC International Serious Games Showcase & Challenge event with links directly to that event.
This is a fantastic opportunity for national and international exposure with category the Grand Prize winning entries automatically be awarded a place at the International Serious Games Showcase & Challenge Competition held at I/ITSEC, Orlando in December 2012.
For the purpose of the SimTecT Challenge, entries will be considered a game if they involve an assigned challenge and employ some form of positive and/or negative reward system.
Entries will be considered a serious game if they use the gaming attributes described above to overcome a designated problem or deficiency, and provide appropriate feedback to the user about their efforts, particularly through collaboration with an expert agency with whom the problem or deficiency is being addressed. Entered games must target users at the high school level, at a minimum.
Finalists in the SimTecT Challenge will be selected by a panel of leaders in the gaming, industry and academic fields, and will be invited to showcase their serious game at SimTecT 2012, where over 450 attendees will view and vote on each of the finalists. Awards will be presented to the top finishers in each category.
The SimTecT Challenge is open to a wide range of contestants, with submissions expected to include students, indie game developers and commercial organisations. PC game entries (or compiled for PC execution) will be accepted from virtually any application areas including mobile, virtual worlds and original development. Gaming content can be focused on any genre so long as it can demonstrate that it meets the established criteria and fulfils the expectations of a serious game.
All entries will be judged by representatives in leading gaming, academic and industry companies in three primary areas:
- Solution to a Stated Problem
- Technical Quality
- Playability/Usability
Entries may be submitted as a PC Game or as a Mobile Game. The submission fee for Commercial and Business Entries is $250. The submission for Student Entries is free.
It is important to clearly define the problem or need that is being addressed, as well as the gaming or game technology solution involved. It is equally important that your entry be not only technologically sound in its development, delivery and user interface, but also engaging, enjoyable, and easy to use; providing a challenging and rewarding experience to the user.
Only entries from organisations, companies and students registered or residing in Australia or New Zealand are eligible and will be considered.
Innovative approaches or creative collaborations are specifically encouraged and, as such, rewarded in the scoring.
Student Entry Clarification
As long as the submittal was generated as a student project, did not employ professional developers and the team members were students any time until May 1st 2012, we will accept it as a student entry.
Finalists will be prominently displayed and developers are invited to demonstrate their serious games. Final category winners and the Grand Prize winners will be announced during event.
