Wētā Workshop’s game studio is filled to the brim with creative game developers. Unleashing our imaginations to create immersive game worlds is what truly drives and inspires us.

From concept design to polished product, we bring our ideas to life in the games we create. Having been nominated for both VES and D.I.C.E. awards and winning the NZ Pav award, making games of exceptional quality is what we do.

We are currently partnered with Private Division, making "Tales of the Shire" - a game set in Middle-earth, a place where we feel right at home.

Our workplace is flexible, inclusive, supportive ... and dog friendly!

  • Help us develop cutting edge games across a variety of platforms within the Interactive division
  • Fun, collaborative team that looks out for each other
  • Full time, based in Miramar

Weta Workshop’s award-winning concept design and manufacturing facility has been making cool stuff for over 30 years, right here in Miramar, Wellington.

Applying our innovative artistry to the world’s creative industries we take on projects of any size, scope, or scale, from the earliest stages of creative development through to manufacture and delivery all over the world.

We are currently looking for a talented VFX Artist to join our Interactive crew and help us deliver our next PC and Console game project with a major worldwide IP that is very close to our hearts. As a member of the FX team, you will be tasked with creating compelling dynamics and visual FX for all sorts of scenarios. You will help build standalone FX and systems to generate them with in-engine tools. You will be creating a wide range of Visual FX: dynamic simulations, shaders and particle systems to name a few. Additionally, you will be working on asset generation and asset blending/integration.

What will you be doing?

  • Collaborate with artists, programmers, designers, and animators to iterate, polish, and deliver projects
  • Create compelling, authentic, and visually pleasing VFX and assets
  • Design, Create and Implement in-engine particle and shader effects.
  • Create supporting assets such as animations and textures.
  • Create ‘offline’ dynamic simulations for integration into game engines
  • Engage in R&D of new tools and technologies relevant to the project
  • Stay across new toolsets and cultivate an organized and disciplined workflow
  • Project planning using agile workflows, and will be responsible for estimating and tracking VFX tasks
  • Participate in review and feedback sessions as well as staying up to date with the state of the project.

What we’re looking for from you?

  • Minimum 2 years of experience with VFX work in a similar position
  • Ideally you will have a firm understanding of Maya, Unity and Houdini, with scripting knowledge such as c#.
  • Previous games-industry experience and a keen eye for quality and detail is required.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a wide variety of artistic skill and knowledge
  • Games industry experience, with at least 1 shipped title as a game VFX artist.
  • Working knowledge of MEL scripting and familiarity with C#
  • Knowledge of production tools such as Perforce, Git, Jira, a plus
  • Eye for detail, commitment to quality and accuracy to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standards.

The content you produce will be deeply integral to defining our upcoming games and experiences! If that wasn’t awesome enough, you’ll also get to work with an exceptionally talented team of experienced game veterans, fresh-faced idea generators as well as the world-building imaginations that forged Middle Earth, Pandora, and many others. And we’re in Wellington, New Zealand - which is bloody nice if we do say so ourselves.

We’re a fun, collaborative team, we look out for and support each other. Creative, down to earth, and inclusive, we welcome diversity, dogs and pretty much anything that makes for a better workday.
