The "Look Out For This Movie" Thread

There are quite a few of us that are here that seem to be rather big movie buffs, so I decided to start this thread because of that. Basically you can tell people if there have been any movies that you have seen recently and whether it is worth watching or if we should avoid it like the plague. It doesn't have to be a new release cinema viewing either. just any movie that you have seen recently and want to warn people to look out for.

Try not to insult each others tastes. We all have our views and opinions :)

--------------------

I have seen three new movies in the past week or so. I will descibe them from worse to best (to finish on a happy note :) ).

Underworld
I love vampires as much as the next self respecting computer nerd (hell, I have a few Vampire Source books and I don't even play it). I wasn't expecting much going into this movie, and boy did it deliver.

Good Points - Kate Bekinsale looks really hot and plays a hero quite well. The costumes kick arse. The scenes where Salene jumps off a high building, lands on the ground and just keeps on walking casually look really sweet :) Some of the characters were quite cool, but...

Bad Points - ...They went no where. The vampires were presented as nothing more than humans with guns and pointy teeth :( The post production work was really badly done, and the colour correction has been changed to give everything a blue tint. This means that every time you see an outfit that should be a really nice crimson colour, it ends up as some terrible desaturated purple colour. The story was crap and they shouldn't have done what they did (trying not to give away too much).

This movie is probably worth seeing if you aren't a big vampire fan. Vampire fans will probably end up pissed off. Not really a cinema watching. Wait for a DVD version to come out.

Battle Royale 2
For those who have never heard of Battle Royale, you are really missing out. It is one of the most contriversal Japanese movies to have come out in recent years. It is one of my fav movies of all time and not because of the extreme amount of violence in it, or the many attractive school girls. The first one revolves around a class of Year 9 students who are kidnapped and sent to a deserted island to kill each other off. They recieve a random weapon and provisions to last for three days. At the end of the three days, there can only be one student left alive. If there are any more, then everyone who is left is killed instantly and there is no winner. They also have electronic tags around their necks to track their life signatures and pin point their position. The colars also have little explosives in them. In the three days, you get to know some of the students and how they deal with being told they have to kill their friends. It has a great story line and really leaves you thinking at the end.

Number two takes place after it, and has slightly updated rules. You now have a partner, and if they die, you die. It is team based as well. Weapons aren't random this time. Overall it is a good movie but doesn't touch the original. Seeing as many Western viewers didn't see into the sub plots, they explain everything flat out and leave you with nothing to think about. The characters aren't as cool as in the original (although actress Kou Shibasaki makes a welcome return :) ). I recomend seeing number one, but this one is cool as well.

The Returner
Another Japanese film. This time it is a Japanese take on a holywood style action flick. The basis of the story sounds really cliched, but here it goes. The movie is about a Returner (merc for hire) called Miyamoto. He is on a mission when he accidently shoots a young girl. He takes her back to his house and finds out that she has come back from the future to save the human race (Terminator anyone?). So, dressed in his leather pants and full length leather thrench, Miyamoto teams up with the young girl to save the future. As the movie progresses, the story line becomes more original -and quite frankly- very cool. For an action movie, there is very little violence and not too many action sequences. When there are action scenes though, they are quite well done, and have some effects that have the ability to show the Matrix up quite nicely. The Returner also has effects by Robot (the company responsible for the awesome Onimusha 3 intro). The effects are cool, but the compositing isn't extremely well done (although that could have been because it was on VCD). The characters are cool and actually look like they could kick arse. The bad guy is arse hole and really makes you want to see him die. I really recomend this film.

Has anyone seen Once Upon A Time In Mexico at all? I would like to know what it is like before I go and see it in the cinema.

kill bill is an acquired taste :P but i thought it rocked. Still waiting to see hellsing *mumble grumble*

Well here are a few more movies i'm looking forward to
Alexander - For those of you who haven't heard of it, it is about Alexander the great, it looks awesome, Troy minus the myth :)

The Punisher - It also looks awesome. It's based on the marvel comic. Abotu a guy who goes crazy after his family gets wiped out, kinda reminds me of Max Payne. You can bet there will be a lot of dead bodies.

Garfield - Stop laughing, I loved the cartoon so im hoping the movie will be good, and he's 3D.

The incredible - Pixar hasn't failed to disappoint me before and this one looks tonnes of fun

That is all for now but some of those won't be coming out for quiet sometime. Like alexander only comes out in the US in November, so it probably wont come here till next year. Why does australia get shit so late? it sux arse. Games, Movies and music. All of it late.

unknownuser2's picture

Alexander looks awesome, The punisher looks like another good marvel sourced movie.

Garfield simply rocks.

Re: Getting things so late, .au gets cars late too except Ford / Holden. i say 'meh' to strict import / export laws.

ScORCHo's picture

hey guys, sure the Garfield comics and the cartoon are cool and i love them, but i suggest you watch the garfield movie trailer...that will change your minds to "NOT" wanting to ever see it......ever.

palantir's picture

There are actually two Alexander movies in production, ?Alexander? by Oliver Stone (and heaps of other big names), due out this November, and ?Alexander the Great? (staring Leonardo Dicaprio and Nicole Kidman) which is due out sometime next year. They are both looking really good, though ?Alexander the Great? is apparently having a few difficulties due to its epic scale. Cool!

It so good that the epic is popular again!

I saw a trailer for the Incredibles, and it looks like another great pixar film. Also, Spider-man 2 is out real soon ? that should be fun.

Yay harry potter out in 10 days

unknownuser2's picture

I cant say im a fan of the harry potter films at all even though, like the chronicles of narnia, I was rasied on them, D&D fantasy is just so much more to my liking.

SpiderMan 2 is a must see for me though!!

MoonUnit's picture

amazing, i havent seen any adds for spidey 2 recently, but ages ago when its release was far off in the future i saw heaps

it was released yesterday wasnt it? (or was that a US only release date).

Potter could be good, as long as its not too rosy for the kiddlywinks.

when the hell are we getting hellboy? (or has it come out and i just havent noticed :P ).

bullet21's picture

I aint to bigg fan of potthead either, and hellboy does definately look god, and im quiet sure it hasn't been released in Aus yet

HP:PoA is meant to be a lot more 'adult oriented' than the first two.. Thats not saying it's some kind of twisted porno, but that the script and direction has been changed (fixed) so that it is no longer predominately a kiddy film.

One week to go :D

unknownuser4's picture

Yeah the new Harry is Potter is rated M, so it'll be much more mature orientated than the pg rated first 2.

heheh so cool..

unknownuser1's picture

Finally. A movie for all the family. Looks like it may be worth it just for the laugh factor :D

MoonUnit's picture

oooh creepyness, shoulda come up with something better for the mask though.

was that morgan freeman?

Makk's picture

Just saw dawn of the dead. PRetty good movie, worth the price of admission. The punisher on the other hand, oh my.... avoid.

MoonUnit's picture

as a marvel loyalist im going to have to ignore that comment and blindly see it anyway :D

ScORCHo's picture

moonunit: twis Danny Glover.

Planning to see Dawn of the dead. I saw the old version when I was 8 or so, and yeh, it FREAKED me out. There was a really cheesy ubisoft game that came out on the Amiga on that movie. I think they gave it away for free on the cover of Amiga Format. Yeh, that game was rated pretty high on the crap 'o metre.

I just saw The Day After Tomorrow. Great special effects. Typical disaster movie. A few cheesy bits here and there. No climax or twists at the end to speak of. [:)] oops... is that a spoiler? Hope not [:(]. It was an 'ok' movie.

The trailer to HERO rocks! (Directed by Tarantino, stars Jet Li). Can't wait for that one! [B)] The movie's premise (Jet Li's character has to kill a sequence of master assassins for revenge etc) sounds a bit like Kill Bill though! [:o)]

MoonUnit's picture

lol that sounds exactly like kill bill

scorcho, "twis" ?

palantir's picture

*** very small spoilers ? nothing about the plot though ***
I saw the new Harry Potter movie. It?s much better then the previous films, but the effects in this new one are awesome! It features a hippogryph, which was done brilliantly. It was probably the most amazing creature animation I?ve ever seen. It was so realistic?

It?s definitely worth the ticket price, even if just to see this creature on the big screen (and yeah, I suppose the movie itself is pretty good).

-Though I?m not sure about the scene where Harry is ?playing with his wand? under the sheets? (Yes, I?m serious)

MoonUnit's picture

sure thats great palantir, make my so hyped to see the movie then freak me right out :P

palantir's picture

Harry's going through those years, you see.

You will see. Oh yes. You will see...

I agree that HERO looks freak'n sweet! And what's better yet, you can actually see the movie now! That's right, the movie has been out since 2002. Tarantino is just paying for the dubbing/rerelease. It was directed by Zhang Yi Mou. Check out www.herothemovie.com for more info. Or http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/

Other then that, then next few weeks have a bunch of movies I"m interested in. But as release dates are different from Australia and the US, I'm not sure when I'll get to see them in Australia. (YAY only 3 more weeks!!!!)

Things that look interesting include:

"The Chronicles of Riddick" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296572/
"The Stepford Wives" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327162/ - Hey, hot chicks that are robots? What could be better?
"The Terminal" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362227/ - Sappy love story... but hey, I'm flying 12,000 miles to be with my love so...
"Around the World in 80 Days" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327437/
"Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364725/
"Spider-Man 2" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316654/ - I mean, who's not looking forward to this one.

Whoa, so I just checked the release dates for all these. (Which all come out in June over here) Most of them are coming out in September!!! What's up with that? I mean, it's not like they have to localize the movies for Australian release. Sheesh, I bet it's something to do with Politics.

unknownuser4's picture

Yeah it's weird dude, sometimes we'll get films a week or two before Europe or America, sometimes months after.

moonunit: Like twas(was), twis(is).
ahhh forget it. :) ...what am i talkin about?

MoonUnit's picture

indeed
well i went to go and see the punisher but it was MA and i forgot to bring any ID with my birthdate on it, blast! so i ended up seeing harry potter which i dont regret because it was a good movie. The focus is so shifted from the previous movies, theres no mention of the house cup and only one quidditch match. Its all harry and the climax of the movie. Gotta tell you though i think they need a new codec, distant objects were fuzzy and things like highly textured walls were also. they need renderman ;) https://renderman.pixar.com/

unknownuser2's picture

Chronicles of Riddick ( the game ) has been touted by many game review sites as " Its as though it were pulled from the future " " One of the best games ever produced for the xbox to date.. "

Starbreeze have done another sweet job it seems.

The Movie also looks very cool - i loved pitch black, and would see the sequel regardless [:P]

Won't go and see Harry Potter. Too stuborn!

Anti Gremlin's picture

I have not heard one bad review in regards to that game.. Why am I so scared?? LOL.

MoonUnit's picture

I know, seriously a movie game thats good , hardly beleivable, a movie game that involves vin diesel thats good, anyone and everyone should be scared :P

DaMunkee's picture

I heard it was good as well, (Chronicals of riddick that is) but I also heard it's short. Like 6 hours playthrough or something. Seems kind of low :( Ah well, if it's a good game, then six hours is fine i guess.
