John Passfield (co-founder and co-owner of Krome Studios) has the fifth installment in his game musings series up on his personal website. In this installment, John talks about the lack of exposure our game developers get from local press and gaming magazines. What's surprising in some cases, as John points out, is that the knowledge and know-how that our developers can provide are pushed aside for the opinions from overseas individuals, even when the topic concerned is of our own industry...
"The latest issue of Australian GamePro has an article on Australian Game Development featuring interviews with the ?top brass? from the recent AGDC. Who do they interview for the article? You?d expect somebody from Krome Studios, Atari Melbourne House, Auran, Pandemic, Blue Tongue, THQ, EyeCon, Microforte, Perception, Creative Assembly, Bullant Studios, Rat Bag, Tantalus or Torus just to name a few?? Nope, no way. In order to get an informed opinion on the Australian industry they talked with the people who know best: American Laura Fryer and British Phil Harrison. Go figure? This is fairly typical of the coverage Aussies get in the local press. Granted, a number of magazines try from time to time to do a page here and there profiling a new game or two, but given the breadth, depth and talent of Australian developers the coverage is pretty poor."
There is also a mention of the X|Media|Lab Professional Day Conference where it seems the organisers weren't interested in Krome's participation. It's a very interesting read, and there's also a reply from a games journalist that sheds some light on why there's a lack of local developer coverage, so jump over to John Passfield's website and have a read!
