It's a very exciting time for independent games development, and it's always great to hear of new indie studios popping up everywhere. If you're a new indie studio, be sure to let us know so we can add you to our developers listing!
The latest addition we just added is a new indie studio Ludo Digital. Ludo Digital herald from Melbourne and comprise of staff who use to be from IronMonkey Studios. They're most definitely experienced and adept at iPhone development, and they've published their first game for the Apple Appstore called Art Deco Backgammon 3D.
From the video demonstration below, it looks like the exceptional IronMonkey standard of quality has come across with this new app. Ludo Digital have informed me that Art Deco Backgammon 3D takes the title of the only available 3D Backgammon game on the Appstore, so if you're interested in checking it out, click here.
Art Deco Backgammon features Include:
» Tactile Drag & Drop controls that makes you feel that you are physically playing the board game
» Color coded move guides to help you make your moves naturally
» Stunning graphics with super smooth animation
» 4 levels of AI difficulty
» Pick up and play with the auto-resume feature that lets you get back to the game after phone calls & other interruptions

small edit please
Wow,
Thanks for the comprehensive feature on us. Can I just request one small edit? ArtDeco Backgammon 3D is the only 3D backgammon game on the store; not the only backgammon game on the store ;) (though that would have been awesome). However we do have P2P multiplayer going, and are working on online multiplay, which makes us a bit more unique among backgammon games on the store.
Cheers
fixed
Whoops, sorry about that. Fixed!

Question
What sort of games does Ludo Digital intend to make? I understand that you guys want to make casual games for the iPhone market but are virtual board games the only games you guys intend to make or are there other genres that you will explore in the near future? Looking over at your website I'm not getting a proper sense of what your company is all about to be quite honest with you.
mission statement... or something like it
We are all about making games whilst trying to raise an infant. Both are extremely hard to master, but very rewarding. For those of you who have tried development on your own whilst having a baby will know what I mean. There is never enough time for both.
As such the mission statement is very rough; we make what we can in the time we have. Backgammon is a game that we play a lot of ourselves with a simple yet challenging game logic, so it was a natural pick for a first product. We could focus on getting a basic game engine up without putting the technical requirement bar too high, no need for skinning or complex physics. There where a number of other benefits to us with picking a virtual board game:
- The game board is a natural gameplay sandbox which makes for high geometry yield on screen; almost all the polygons in the game are on screen at all times. Almost all assets made are shown on screen during a round.
- The gameplay implementation can be made (and is in this case) totally deterministic which makes unit testing very easy.
- Logic errors are easy to detect, deviations from the reference implementation (the actual board game).
- A fixed target, the basic game idea has been around for a while ;), that you can pin a pretty definite deadline on.
The end product is that we have a published game and a fairly fast and easy to use 3D game engine that we use on other projects.
To conclude; virtual board games is not all we are (and intend to be) about, we are exploring other genres.
Cheers, Jacques
