Despite the rather low turn out at the midnight launches for the Playstation 3 around Australia, it looks like Sony's next-gen console has done fairly well during its first ten days of sales. The GfK figures are out and show that 27,083 PS3's were sold in Australia between March 23 and April 1, and combined with software sales, racked up $33 Million dollars worth of business. AustralianIT has compared Sony's numbers with the other competing consoles, with the PS3 doing pretty well against the Xbox 360, but not quite matching the success of the Nintendo Wii...
In unit sales, however, the PS3 launch failed to match Nintendo's Wii, which saw 32,000 units sold in four days. The Wii is however significantly cheaper than the PS3, costing $399.
The GFK stats also show that Playstation 3 launch titles dominated the local sales charts, with PS3 games filling in nine of the ten spots. More info at Australian IT at the following link...
C'mon... No excuses now... had your chance
Meaning... ?
meaning that them saying "oh the wii is cheaper is the only reason people are buying it' is a lie a flat out lie to make them sound better, if they announced a price cut would they say 'oh the only reason our console is selling more now is because of the cut'? i dont think so. Sony face facts you screwed up and you didnt sell as many YOU LOST SONY
Bravo... The launch was a loss...
Don't bring it around with that double dutch...
I think you guys are dillusional, and need to do some research as well as review console history - meaning last generation, in particular how the Game Cube sold alot to begin with, then, died off.
Sony have had solid success in Europe - for one. They have developed a platform that is soild, it will out live the rest, including Xbox 360. It's still early days, but I think a lot of this has to do with the PS2, that is still selling very, very well.
Sony have made plans for it to still be supported for another year.
Why perhaps, they are not in a rush to lower the PS3 price-point, in that they are still making money from the PS2, and don't want to bring this to an end prematurely. Unlike Microsoft, who did exactly that to the Xbox. They aren't releasing any more games for the platform, yet Sony are still doing so for the PS2 - which is great for local developers, giving them time to get a better handle over next-gen.
The Wii is a gimick, that has yet to reach the success that Sony have already done with the PS2. Of course they just might, but, I doubt it.
Why don't you guys really say, why as devleopers, you hate Sony and the PS3 so much?
Then there is the "Xbox 360: Elite."
What back-track that one is...
Wii isn't a gimick they just knew they didn't want to compete with the whole lets outdo this other company with superb graphics and just focus on making good games. It more just compliments the other two consoles, both Microsoft and Sony trying to get people to buy the Wii as their second console.
In terms of the PS3, I'm not rushing out and buying one mainly due to price factors. I know from the developers point of view it's like last gen development, titles that are exclusive for the platform will most likely get the best results due to some oddities in the hardware.
If the PS3 is to "out live the rest" it will need to catch up to the Xbox360 and the Wii.
As more time goes by the less likely this is going to happen.
Well, we'll see about that one. I mean, the DS was selling f*ck all until it released the DS lite, and then it caught up to and passed by the PSP.
Though, the PSP is still selling very well, and a lot of analysts are painting a rosey picture for it and the DS... so let's not begin the PSP bashing as well ;)
In the end, don't juxtapose the overall console shit storm that's happening.
Define Success, then compare it to what actually happened at the launch.
Redundant info: I'm and X360 junky, but that doesn't mean that I can't think that all three consoles are good in their own right. I'm just on the Launch status of Sony that's all.
The sales were strong at launch in Europe, and in Australia. Some even think they broke sales records, and not just in hardware, but with software as well. Australia however, means nothing in the greater scheme of things, like New Zealand sales figures. But Europe, is looking very positive for the platform.
And yes, they didn't sell out or have ravenous fans and cues at launch, but, that means f*ck all to the stats, especially over the long term.
This isn't a sprint folks, its a marathon. It's longevity, its getting 10 solid years out of a platform. It's not killing off a platform you are still making good money from in a rush to get a new system out before your competitors.
So as developers, let's try and cut the BS and try to be at least objective, and realise that there is a lot of hype going around, and, that it is still very, very early days.
