Screenplay has an interview with Marcus Westbury who you may know had a pivotal role in initiating and organising the Freeplay Conference in Melbourne. Marcus has produced a three-part series for the ABC called Not Quite Art which will be airing soon on the ABC. The interview touches on some of Macrus's throughts on the interactive medium as well as the cultural role of video games...
(Marcus) Like any cultural form, computer games help define what we believe is possible, the stories and myths of our culture - how we see the world. They also teach us a lot: I have been a long-term Civilization nut and I am sure I learnt more about organizing and decision making about actions and their consequences from playing Civ that I ever learnt in any school or course I ever took. The problem is that computer games really struggle to live up to their cultural potential.
You can catch the three-part series of Not Quite Art on the ABC on the 16th of October! The second part of the series has a fair bit on Free Play and computer games so be sure to check it out when it's on!
