Sound Designer

Irrational Games is currently looking for a sound designer to work on its next project. Any candidate must have experience in an audio related field and will ideally have practical knowledge of the tools commonly used for audio development in games.

Special Effects Artist

Irrational Games is looking for a talented special effects artist to work in our Canberra office on our next big project.

The ideal candidate will have delivered visual effects for at least 1 recently released console title and be able to provide both practical technical knowledge and aesthetic input on all areas of the game.

A superb understanding of 3DS MAX, Photoshop is essential; a working knowledge of Unreal 3 material shader editor is a big plus. Also crucial is knowledge of techniques that will enable us to ensure our visual effects work really shines on the target platforms given their restrictions.

Irrational Games is currently looking for an experienced coder to join the team in our Canberra office.

The ideal candidate will have an intuitive grasp of user-machine interaction and the bearing that has on interface design. This is a dual role, in that we want to apply that specialist knowledge to both our in-house tools development and the final user interface for our next big project.

Superb C/C++ Skills and excellent software engineering skills are an essential as the candidate will be expected to both work with existing code and to architect tools and systems from scratch that other developers will then use on a daily basis.

Irrational Games is currently looking for an experienced visual effects coder to join our Canberra team working on our next big project.

Candidates must have a superb knowledge of C/C++, OO principles, shader language and general rendering technologies that has been demonstrated that in recently released console titles.

An acute understanding of the 3D graphics research areas including particles, fluid, fog, cloth and screen space effects along with how to utilize and optimize these technologies in games is essential.

This role will require close work with the art team so a good working knowledge of content creation tools is a big plus, in particular 3DS max & Unreal 3 Editor.

Irrational Games is currently looking for an experienced senior game coder with an excellent practical knowledge of C/C++ and OO principles to work on its next big project at our Canberra office.

The ideal candidate will have worked on a recently released console game and be able to discuss in detail the systems that they were responsible for. The ability to work closely with the game designers in an iterative fashion, providing technical solutions to some of the most original design concepts seen in the industry today is essential.

Although there are no direct management responsibilities with this role you are likely to be first point of contact for any questions regarding specific areas of the design so being able to define workflow and scheduling impacts for yourself and other members of the team is a plus

Senior Game Designer

Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior game designer to work on our next big project

You will be responsible for creating, documenting and communicating game design concepts and mechanics. As well, you will be required to work with our design tools to implement game mechanics or parameters and test and tune those. You will probably be required to do a certain amount of level building or design as well though this is not the major focus of the role.

At Irrational we take game design very seriously. You should be familiar with the current state of the art in game design across a wide range of genres on both PC and console. You should be capable of analysing and critiquing game designs and using that analysis to inform your own design sensibilities. We expect you to be familiar with Irrational products and be able to speak critically about them.

This position requires a high degree of creativity. You will be required to form a 'vision' of the game and use that vision to inform your design decisions. An important part of the role is then communicating that vision clearly and concisely to the rest of the team and ensuring that they have a clear and specific mandate for their work. You must also provide a receptive ear so that other team members can provide input on the game design and feel that it is paid attention to.

Finally, there are a wide variety of miscellaneous other tasks associated with this position such as speaking at conferences, working on game documentation and manuals and PR duties.

Irrational Games is currently looking for an coder with several years experience working on console platforms to join our Canberra team working on our next big project.

Candidates must have a superb knowledge of C/C++ and OO principles and will have demonstrated that in recently released console titles.

An acute understanding of the potential pitfalls of console development and how to get the best out of the hardware is also essential. As such you should be comfortable working with other coders to optimize and where required restructure systems and features.

Practical experience of 3DS Max, Character studio and Motion Builder is essential. A knowledge and understanding of motion capture is also a plus.

An understanding of scheduling and experience of supervising a team from both managerial and creative aspects is vital as this position is responsible for running a small group of talented animators.

The ability to work to a brief and follow a tight process without compromising the core ideas is also essential.

Strong technical art skills are highly desired with a good understanding of colour theory, perspective, drafting, lighting etc being hugely beneficial, use of industry standard tools such as Photoshop is also a requirement.

Senior Console Programmer

Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior programmer to work on an exciting new next-generation console and PC project. This position is open to candidates with several years experience in the games industry working with current generation consoles (PS2, XBox and/or GameCube).

Irrational programmers are responsible for designing and implementing our game technology. At Irrational, programmers are a significant part of the game design process, so you should be passionately interested in game development as well as writing great code.

Irrational believes in cutting-edge technology married to great game design. We are particularly interested in programmers who have both technical skills and care about how that technology can be used to make games more fun.

Responsibilities:

* work with the game designer and the lead programmer to produce technical design documents and schedules
* write, document and test code to implement the technical design
* liase with design and art teams to ensure that code addresses their technical needs
* research technology to ensure that Irrational products remain at the forefront of games technology
* take responsibility for one or more major areas of a game or piece of technology
* supervise junior or mid-level programmers as required
* review and critique code design and implementation from other programmers
* contribute to the ongoing evolution of the software development process at IGA.

Required Experience and Skills:

* excellent understanding of C/C++
* good understanding of OO design principles
* at least three years experience working with current generation game console technology
* must have shipped at least two game title (or one game title if substantial experience in a related field)
* communication skills and interest in working with our game developers in a cooperative team environment
* commitment to code quality, documentation and sound testing proceedures
* interest in game development and game technology

Additional Experience and Skills (desired but not necessary):

* tertiary educational qualifications in computer science and mathematics
* working knowledge or better or 3D rendering principles including principles of rendering pipelines, 3D transforms and linear algebra, DirectX APIs and current generation 3D graphics hardware and drivers.

You may be required to do a certain amount of level building or design as well though this is not the major focus of the role.
