Rebate spurs activity for Film and TV Industry

While news of the 40% rebate push for game developers features predominantly on Sumea recently, it's certainly worth checking out all the buzz that has come with the film and tv industry being awarded the rebate. It doesn't take to much to imagine a similar spurt of activity, optimism, as well as caution for the local games industry had we seen it receive the same incentive.

Greg Coote, producer at production company Dune Entertainment and investor of many films, called the rebate "unbelievably generous" and described how it will help the film industry, particularly in Sydney, from the brink. As reported on The Age...

Coote predicts a return to full employment for the film industry, which would be welcome in Sydney where crew and facilities suppliers have often struggled since Superman Returns finished at Fox Studios more than 20 months ago.

"A lot of talent that's perhaps treading water right now will get exposure, then there will be a whole new generation coming through," he says.

It seems quite hypocritical of the Federal Government to put the "propping up an industry leads to an unsustainable industry" argument against the games industry regarding incentives when they are doing just that for the ailing film industry. And while the film industry gets a new lease on life for the time being, the chance to make the profitable and burgeoning Australian games industry a more prominent and competitive one on the world stage is lost.

Hey, this has sorta become an opinion piece, but please click on the following link for the article at The Age...

No it will not help Australian film industry at all. It will help American's shoot films in Australia set in America with Australian actors doing American accents. All mony will go to American companies. No films will be set in Australia & no Australian TV shows. It's only a counter for the rising dollar.
If ours video games industry got exactly that then good by. We will need something a lot better something that will see our video game companies grow & prosper. Not American video game companies faverd.

I agree. The article itself has Greg Coote saying that the Yanks will be the ones taking advantage of the rebate.

Yes it's all for Americans no benefit to us like always. The liberal's are a strange & worthless bunch. Just say if I wanted to make a film about bush rangers that had fight seen's like the ones on a lot of chinese movies. I know for a fact it would make million's give it a good story line & all.

However the government would say "NO" to it. But they will say yes to a film about a borgan that apparently repersent's all Australian's. & they will mostly help Americans make movies. Because they think making jobs for people to work on American films is what the industry is all about. How foolish the liberal's are.

One more thing they should force cinema's to show at least 40% or 50% Australian made films. Like the good government of South Korea did. Now look at how much Korean cinema has come because of it.

Yeah if we got something exactly like what the films got it would do more damage than good. Just of subject have you seen the South Korean movie brotherhood if yes. Compare that to Kokoda 13 years in planning with lots of investment. But the s.h.i.t hit the fan all because the government spooked investors. Imo they shouldn't of bothered making Kokoda it was nothing like the real thing.

Agree with the first guy. It's all about America having a film industry in Australia. Not Australia having a film industry in our own blood country.

Lol the first guy hit the head on the nail with his speech. Just look at happy feet. A lot of aussie's were in that but you would never have gussd it.

There is a cool looking Australian film called gabriel. & it's not set in Australia. It's like a little bit horror & matrix. Probably one of the best Australian films ever made it comes out on the 15th.
