Sarah is a composer, performer, teacher and counsellor. She has studied classical, jazz and popular music on piano and guitar, as well as songwriting and composition at Box Hill Institute and Australian Catholic University. Sarah also has experience in singing, particularly when fronting her own self-titled band. Since a young age Sarah has been composing, playing and arranging other composer’s music and for 6 years she has been gigging around Melbourne as an original singer-songwriter with her band. For nearly 4 years she has also played the Hammond in the Australian Deep Purple Tribute band – Made in Purple (https://www.facebook.com/deepestpurpleaustralia/)
At the tail-end of 2013 Sarah released her debut progressive-rock album, “Looking Over My Shoulder” . Triple J Unearthed listeners called Sarah “…unique, passionate and pure.” The 10 rock songs on the album feature screaming organ riffs, grungey guitars and brooding piano melodies. With an eclectic range of influences including video game music, classical, hard rock, progressive-rock, punk, folk and whatever is in between, Sarah Jean’s debut album is ambitious and compelling. Radio stations across Australia played the tracks. Sarah was also interviewed by the likes of local hills stations such as 3MDR radio and 3VYV – as well interstate stations. Throughout 2014 Sarah and her band gigged with the album at great Melbourne venues such as the John Curtin Band Room in Carlton, Sooki Lounge in Belgrave, The Espy Bandroom in St Kilda – and many more.
Aside from progressive-rock music, Sarah has also composed works for classical groups including string quartets and wind quintets.
